Stop what you’re doing, one of the biggest films of 2023 has quietly been added to Netflix, just in time for Christmas.
Barbie sent the entire world into a spin when it was released last July, with Margot Robbie leading the star-studded cast as the titular doll, alongside Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Emma Mackey, Simu Liu, Ncuti Gatwa and just about anyone else in Hollywood.
Greta Gerwig’s iconic flick made history by raking in more than $1.44billion at the global box office, with talks of a sequel in the works.
While we not-so-patiently wait for an announcement regarding a follow-up, the movie has just popped up on the streaming platform, meaning we can relieve the fun once again.
The official Netflix Twitter account confirmed the news with a video from the film, along with the message: ‘Hi, Barbie! BARBIE IS NOW ON NETFLIX IN THE US.’
Right on cue, fans flooded the post with joy as they made plans to return to Barbie world as soon as possible.
Bri yelled: ‘OMG YAY I’VE BEEN WANTING TO REWATCH.’
Hazel agreed: ‘Ultimate comfort movie im gonna watch it every day [sic].’
‘Oh I’m ab to be insufferable [sic],’ Monie declared.
Baatir posted: ‘Yoooooo, one of my favorite moviesssss! Might just fall asleep to this later! [sic].’
As Steven added: ‘We will all be watching the best movie of 2023!’
Unfortunately, Barbie is currently only available on Netflix in the US, and it is not clear if – or when – it will be coming to the UK version.
The movie focused on Barbie having the time of her life with Ken, and their revolving collection of Barbie and Ken friends, ‘in the colorful and seemingly perfect world of Barbie Land.
‘However, when they get a chance to go to the real world, they soon discover the joys and perils of living among humans.’
Barbie truly took on a life of its own long before it arrived on the big screen last summer – with everyone turning the release into an entire event.
Cinema-goers were also delighted by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer premiering on the same day, celebrating the phenomenon known as ‘Barbenheimer’ with a unique double feature.
Many studios have tried, and failed, to recreate the Barbenheimer effect with their own releases – including dubbing Wicked and Gladiator ‘Glicked’ – but nothing quite took off in the same way.
Now all we need is Cillian Murphy’s Oscar-winning performance to debut on Netflix so that we can truly go back to last summer…
Barbie is available to stream on Netflix US now.
