Chelsea are a ‘shambles’ at the moment, according to former Blues star Wayne Bridge, who feels they would be letting their second best player go if they sell Conor Gallagher this summer.

The England midfielder has been heavily linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge, with the likes of Aston Villa and Tottenham interested in his services.

A sale would make sense in that Gallagher is a homegrown talent and banking around £50m would be very helpful for Chelsea adhering to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

However, the 24-year-old was one of the Blues’ most consistently impressive players last season and Bridge sees his potential exit as illustrative of how poorly the club is being run.

Chelsea just surprise me all the time at the moment,’ Bridge said via Betfred.

‘It’s been a bit of a shambles down there. The fact Conor Gallagher is in the mix just goes to show that when I say ‘shambles’, it is a shambles, because he’s probably their second-best player after Cole Palmer. It just seems all over the shop.’

Enzo Maresca has been brought in as manager to replace Mauricio Pochettino, although he may have little say over who is bought and sold during the summer transfer window.

Bridge hopes the new manager has the chance to assess his squad and make decisions, but those choices may well be out of his hands.

‘[Maresca] needs to get in there, really, and see all the players before he makes a decision,’ said the former England full-back. ‘I don’t think you can rush to a decision until you know exactly what’s going on.

‘There could be a few faces he’s really unsure about when he sees them play. Sometimes, as a manager, you can see players week in, week out, but when you start working with them, they’re not like you thought.’

Gallagher has just one year left on his contract at Chelsea and Villa have made an approach to sign him this summer, with the Blues demanding £50m for his signature.
