Games Inbox: Does the PS5 have enough good exclusive games?

Horizon Forbidden West – the number of PS5 exclusives has dried up recently (Picture: Sony)

The Tuesday letters page is still uncertain about the need to release the PS5 Pro this year, as one reader is baffled by Suicide Squad.

Exclusive deal
Asda are currently selling off the original PlayStation 5 model for £300. I’ve not bought the PlayStation 5 yet because I’d hoped the slim edition would be less huge and ridiculous looking than the launch console, but for £300 I could probably put up with the old design.

But then I thought about what game(s) I’d buy alongside it and started scrolling through PlayStation 5 games and… I dunno, Spider-Man 2, maybe?

I have an Xbox Series X and a Switch, so I’m covered for multiformat and indie games. But I just couldn’t find enthusiasm for the PlayStation 5’s available games. I know Microsoft isn’t exactly swimming in exclusives either, but this gen more than any other I don’t feel an urgency to have Xbox and PlayStation.

Maybe once the PS5 Pro comes out it’ll be a nicer size/shape and come with some mind-blowingly original game that gets me excited, but for now someone else can grab a bargain at Asda instead of me.

GC: The deal doesn’t seem to exist online, so it must only be in-store.

Hope springs eternal
We’ve had a year of people complaining about the lack of new game announcements from Sony and now rumours about the PS5 Pro. It’s all starting to make sense, as Sony is going to want to show these games at their best.

When they show them to the world they are going to say, ‘Footage captured on PS5 Pro’. I’m hoping that an official announcement on a mid-gen update is going to open up the floodgates for more announcements about what else they are working on.

Strange evolution
I traded in a couple of games over the weekend and picked up a copy of Suicide Squad for a total of £2 after trading, my theory being that I wanted something new to play and I’d be able to find at least £2 worth of entertainment out of it.

I’m pretty sure it’s worth the £2 but my god what a confused game it is. Some absolutely great dialogue and cut scenes, some OK-ish gunplay and traversal, but just so many miles away from the Batman: Arkham series that it’s hard to believe it’s even from the same studio.

What I’m finding most frustrating though is that I’m constantly thinking how good it could have been if they’d done away with live service rubbish and focused on a new single-player experience similar to the Arkham trilogy that served them so well. How we ended up with a pretty dull third person looter shooter from such great roots is truly baffling.

Dream find
That London Gaming Market sounded interesting, I wonder if something similar would ever happen closer to home for me in the Midlands?

You know, more than a couple of times now, I’ve had a dream where I’m roaming around my hometown of Coventry and I come across some hidden gem of a video games store that stocks all sorts of retro games. You know the kind of place, several of them seemed to pop up back in the mid-noughties.

Alas, as it is my subconscious, I can only recognise what I already have. But it can get weirder: like Gunstar Heroes but for the SNES, unusual retro consoles that were never made, or Sonic games that are recognisable but certainly never existed.

I never know what it is I’m searching for in these nocturnal escapades, but if it’s at night then I also find an independent fast food joint that does a great cheeseburger for a quid. Yes, I know a McDonald’s double cheeseburger is not far off from a quid, but still. Every little helps, doesn’t it?

GC: The letter below says there’s going to be one in Birmingham.

Retro prices
Nice feature about London Gaming Market last week.

I am going to the one in Birmingham next month, which is closer for me. It is run by the same organisers. Haven’t been to one before, so not sure what to expect. There will be games, obviously, and I will be looking to see what they have got for the 3DS and PSP. Just hope the sellers are sensible with their prices. If they aren’t competitive with the likes of eBay and CeX then I won’t be buying.

Be interesting to see what other games related stuff will be there. I wouldn’t mind a few games magazines from my Spectrum and Amiga days, so to reminisce about the old days.

Maybe there will be a few arcade machines there to play on.

Or am I hoping for too much?

Did any GC readers go to London last weekend or any other past ones? Be nice to hear what they thought of it.

Cold Topic
Alto’s suggestion in Monday’s Inbox, that the next Tomb Raider game should be Lara Croft and the Lost Valley of the Dinosaurs, definitely has my vote. Inbox magic, make it so!

Also, have the weekend Hot Topics stopped again? If it’s due to lack of entries, may I politely suggest the rules weren’t clear on the last one? It was to do with favourite format exclusives, but with the restriction that the game also actually had to be published by the hardware manufacturer, but also not necessarily made by them. I admit I had to read the description a few times before I could work out why I couldn’t write in about Final Fantasy 7 Remake (the example you used)!

GC: It wasn’t just that week’s, we’ve barely been getting enough Hot Topic letters for a while now. The weekday Inbox is far more popular, so we’re giving the Hot Topic a rest for now.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s a flop!? U wot m8. I have gathered a large list of ‘friends’ on PSN over the years and I’m happy to see at least 30% playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.

It took me six months till I bought Final Fantasy (was it 15 or 16 with Clive?) and I expect that over a longer period of time Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will sell just fine. It’s a great game.

Half price
I’ll be honest, I’d buy a PS5 Pro if the price was right, for the feature stuff like wireless charging and more memory from the start. If it came out the same time as GTA 6 then I’d want graphics at maximum frame rate at 120fps.

I’d want bells and whistles. I’d go around £600, sell my normal PlayStation 5 for £300 and get the upgrade for only £300, but would have to be a lot more.
David

GC: No open world game is going to run at 120fps this generation or probably the next one. Also, it’s a pointless waste of processing power, 60fps is all that’s necessary.

What happened?
I don’t get what’s happening with gaming at the moment… why is a PS5 Pro coming out? Have they really scratched the surface of the PlayStation 5 given how Spidey 2 looked and comparisons with other games? Have they really pushed the AI component in Gran Turismo? I get GTA 6 (a game I’ll no doubt invest in, then hate myself as I’ll hate the tropes and I have kids in the house meaning okay times are limited), but are we saying already it needs an extra powerful console to run it?

This is why I love the simplicity of Nintendo’s consoles! I have to say after playing Zelda, Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Hogwarts Legacy (PS5), and Metroid Dread, along with a lot of Mario Kart, EA Sports FC, and Gran Turismo 7, I’m kind of wondering why there is this push away from single or multiplayer on the same screen games.

I am going to, I think, get Helldivers, but this is only because I keep playing Fortnite with my kids and after years of being awful at shooters, I’ve got a bit better and it’s nice to have the popcorn film to go along with the more weighty entry.

Basically, don’t we just need a good mix of exciting and entertaining stuff, rather than this hand-wringing hardware-pushing next big thing! I’m an Apple user but I’m finding myself pondering a powerful PC under the lounge TV at the moment!

Anyway, before I depart, have you ever reviewed Sasquatch (kids play on iOS), it’s absolutely superb!
Catcave

GC: We’ve never heard of it. Something called Sneaky Sasquatch is the first thing to come up in a search, is that it?

Inbox also-rans
I love how Sony keeps inventing new ways to ignore Bloodborne. It’s beginning to seem like a vendetta. I do not understand it one better. Easily the best PlayStation exclusives ever.
Winston

I feel for the Battlefield developer that had his studio shut down but a whole company dedicated to making a campaign mode for Battlefield, that the vast majority of players will never even try, seems like a bad idea from the start.
