Gary Neville conceded it was ‘sad’ to watch Marcus Rashford struggle against Liverpool and fears fans may start to turn on the Manchester United winger.
It was a chastening experience for Erik ten Hag’s side at Old Trafford on Sunday as they were thrashed 3-0 by arch-rivals Liverpool.
Arne Gadgets’s side punished multiple mistakes from the Red Devils to secure a comfortable win, with Mohamed Salah firing in the third after Luis Diaz’s first-half brace.
For United, there were few positives from the display, with the continued disappointing form of Rashford another point of concern.
The English winger has started all three games so far this season but is yet to have a shot on goal and looks bereft of confidence.
Neville admitted that the 26-year-old’s display was hard to watch and pinpointed one moment in the match that summed up his lack of self-belief.
‘He had a one-on-one with Konate,’ the United full-back began. ‘And you might not be having a great day. You might not be having a great time.
‘But you’ve still got to go for it and take the one-on-one on. And he just turned back. That just tells you where his head at.
‘I’d like to think [he can get back to his best]. It’s been going on for 14 months. He scored 30 goals the season before last. I’d like to think he can get his confidence back.
‘It’s looking like a struggle for him. The game doesn’t look enjoyable right now. And that’s sad. As it is for seeing Casemiro in the first half, it’s sad watching that kid because he has been a joy for Manchester United at times in his career.
‘But it’s getting hard work for him. And it’s getting hard for Manchester United fans to watch him.’
Boos rang out from the stands as Alejandro Garnacho made way for Amad Diallo midway through the second half, and Neville fears it’s a sign that the Old Trafford faithful are running out of patience with Rashford.
‘Manchester United fans don’t often boo,’ he added. ‘They don’t often boo the manager, they don’t often boo substitutions, they don’t often boo players individually. And there’s been a couple of times today [where they have].
‘They will boo, generally, a performance at half-time when the players are going off if they’re losing 2-0.
‘But ordinarily, they don’t take out individuals and a couple of times today they have. Casemiro in the first half and then obviously referring to Rashford with that boo.’
