Sony has confirmed that there will be no Ghost of Tsushima 2, but instead a sequel that stars a new female character and is set 300 years later in Japanese history.

Although its existence has been obvious for years, Sony has finally announced a sequel to 2020 hit Ghost Of Tsushima. It seems the game will be only a loose follow-up though, with a completely different setting and cast of characters.

Ghost Of Yōtei is set in 1603, compared to 1274 for the original, and while none of the characters are named in the trailer the story seems to involve a mask-wearing woman being hunted by rōnin (masterless samurai) for unspecified reasons.

Mount Yōtei is an inactive volcano on Japan’s second largest island of Hokkaido and it seems reasonable to imagine that the game’s open world will encompass most of the island.

Unless the game suddenly becomes about literal ghosts, none of the original Ghost Of Tsushima characters will be in the game. It also means that the sequel takes place towards the end of the Sengoku period, which is the most common setting for Japanese historical media.

Ghost Of Tsushima was set in the 13th century, which was so far back in time that concepts such as ninja and the samurai’s bushido code didn’t yet exist. The new 17th century setting also means that Western-made guns will be a factor in the game, with one being featured prominently in the reveal trailer.

Anything else is hard to discern at the moment but the game certainly looks incredible, which is no surprise as the original PlayStation 4 game was one of the best-looking on the system.

The PlayStation Blog names the main character as Atsu but other than that offers no additional detail, just that back then Hokkaido was known as Ezo and was ‘outside the rule of Japan, and filled with sprawling grasslands, snowy tundras, and unexpected dangers.’

‘Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons,’ adds developer Sucker Punch.

The game is specified as coming out next year but given the lack of information at this stage it seems fair to imagine that it won’t be out until the end of 2025.
