GTA 5 music from cancelled Trevor DLC sheds new light on old expansion

A piece of music believed to be from a cancelled story expansion from GTA 5 has emerged online, hinting at what might have been.

Despite being the most successful traditional video game ever made, Grand Theft Auto 5, unlike its predecessors, never received any single-player DLC.

It’s long been understood that Rockstar had planned story DLC for GTA 5 before GTA Online became a huge success, with the online mode subsequently swallowing up all of the studio’s attention. Trevor voice actor Steven Ogg even recently confirmed he had acted in scenes for an expansion, where the character was a secret agent of sorts.

This expansion, along with others uncovered by dataminers, was never released, but now more details about the DLC have emerged via an unused music track.

On Sunday, June 23 GTA fan page GTA Focal shared a track on Twitter called Clifford by the duo Sweet Valley. The post claims it was released in 2021 by the group and was from the cancelled story DLC for Trevor.

Sweet Valley is composed of Nathan Williams and his brother Kynan, with the former best known as a member of the band Wavves. Wavves have a few songs in GTA 5, including the track Leave, and Nathan Williams hosts the game’s Vinewood Boulevard radio station.

As clarified by Reddit user HeySlickThatsMe, the Clifford track was originally posted to Sweet Valley’s Patreon in 2021. In the Patreon post, which is locked behind a paywall, the duo claimed they wrote some music for a GTA 5 expansion including this track, which is named Clifford 2 May 29.

The number implies this was the second track for the DLC, while the name ‘Clifford’ was previously discovered as an internal name related to Trevor’s story expansion.

The name has made its way into GTA 5 in an official capacity too, with Clifford being the AI network introduced in the Doomsday Heist for GTA Online.

It’s unclear which Clifford came first but it’s understood that many of the concepts for the DLC, including elements of its story, were repurposed for Doomsday Heist – which means there’s next to zero chance of Rockstar ever going back and finishing the planned Trevor expansion.

While the success of GTA Online might continue to be a roadblock, one rumour already suggests that GTA 6 will have single-player DLC. However, since that was the original plan for GTA 5 as well there’s no guarantee it will actually happen.
