Harry Redknapp has urged Chelsea to sell ‘average’ stars in a summer fire sale in order to avoid a transfer nightmare over midfielder Conor Gallagher.

There is lots of speculation over Gallagher’s future and it was widely thought that Chelsea were looking to offload the academy graduate, which left fans baffled.

That’s because the England star was one of Chelsea’s best players last term but the club’s owners – BlueCo – have since made a U-turn and are now ‘considering’ a new deal for him.

Gallagher is out of contract at the end of next season with Tottenham and Aston Villa still strongly interested in a deal for the 24-year-old this summer.

Redknapp has urged the Blues to do everything they can to keep Gallagher at Stamford Bridge, even if it means selling a number of recent BlueCo flops.

‘If Chelsea are looking to go anywhere next season, then they really need to look to keep the likes of Conor Gallagher and their homegrown players if they can,’ Redknapp told Metro.co.uk via Sorare.

‘If it was me, I’d keep him and sell some of the players they’ve bought who have been so average.’

Chelsea have spent over £1 billion on players since Todd Boehly et al took over from previous owner Roman Abramovich in May 2022.

They splashed out £88.5m to sign Mykhailo Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk and he’s produced just seven goals and four assists across 58 games.

Mudryk recently warned the club’s fans over their ‘expectations’ for him in the upcoming 2024-25 campaign.

Despite Mudryk’s struggles, Gallagher is almost certainly the more likely player to leave west London.

Chelsea, who are desperate to avoid Gallagher leaving on a free transfer next summer, are under financial pressure and need to find a ‘secret magic sum’ to comply with profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

Clubs who are under PSR pressure may look to prioritise selling academy graduates – such as Gallagher – as they represent pure profit on the balance sheet.
