England will start their Euro 2024 campaign as one of the favourites to win the whole competition.
Gareth Southgate’s side have been placed in Group C alongside Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia and they already know which sides they could face on their route to the final should they indeed progress from the group as expected.
On paper at least, no other team has a greater chance of getting their hands on the iconic Henri Delaunay trophy in next month’s final than England, given the sheer abundance of talent on display in their squad.
Let’s take a look at whether England have ever won the Euros and their record at every previous European Championship to date.
Has England ever won the Euros?
Sadly for Three Lions fans, England has never won the European Championships.
Their only major trophy in their history remains the 1966 World Cup triumph on home soil.
What’s the furthest England has ever got in the Euros?
England reaching the Euro 2020 final was historic for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it is the first time they have ever reached the final of the Euros, and it was their first final full-stop since that World Cup triumph 58 years ago.
Including Euro 2024, England has competed in 11 European Championships since the tournament first began in 1960.
England’s best performances previously at the finals were a third-place finish in Italy in 1968 – but only four teams competed in the tournament that year.
England reached the semi-finals of Euro 96 but lost to Germany on penalties – with Southgate himself missing his spot-kick.
The Three Lions have reached the quarter-finals on two other occasions, losing to hosts Portugal in 2004 and to Italy in 2012, both in penalty shoot-outs.
Under Roy Hodgson, they suffered a humiliating defeat in the Round of 16 to Iceland at Euro 2016, slumping to a 2-1 defeat in Marseille having opened the scoring through a Wayne Rooney penalty.

On the other four occasions (1980, 1988, 1992, and 2000), they did not progress beyond the group stages.
England has also failed to qualify five time in their history; in 1964, 1972, 1976, 1984 and most recently in 2008.
No other team has played more games at the Euros without winning the competition than England.
