Christina Applegate has revealed she is experiencing a ‘pretty bad’ relapse with her symptoms, amid her ongoing battle with multiple sclerosis.
The Dead To Me actress announced that she had been diagnosed with MS – which affects the brain and spinal cord – in 2021, and has been offering updates on her health ever since..
She recently explained that she had been suffering with 30 lesions on her brain, and is currently in a lot of pain.
During the latest episode of her MeSsy podcast, with Sopranos star Jamie-Lynn Sigler, the 52-year-old shared that she hasn’t been able to shower in days, due to how bad her legs feel.
At the very beginning of the instalment, Jamie-Lynn asked how she was doing, when Christina said: ‘I’m in relapse right now, pretty bad.’
Touching on what that means for her, she continued: ‘Intense pain in my legs, not being able to walk to the bathroom without feeling like I’m going to fall, insane tingling, spurts of tingles that are weird, coming from my butt down.
‘I haven’t slept for 24 hours because my eye is doing something weird, where every time I close my eye to go to sleep, my right eye starts to shift.’
Christina detailed her fear surrounding the issue with her eye, telling listeners that she would be getting medical advice as it was ‘freaking her out’.
She also joked that she needed to invest in Cottonelle flushable wipes, as she was using them to bathe herself.
‘My legs have never been this bad, so I don’t know what’s going on,’ she added. ‘No energy, legs are just done, can’t get circulation, I can’t get them to stop hurting.
‘I haven’t taken a shower in three weeks, because I can’t stand in my shower. There’s no f**king way I can stand in my shower.’
MS is a lifelong condition that damages nerves in the body and makes it difficult for sufferers to do everyday things, including walking, talking and eating.
It causes a wide range of potential symptoms, including fatigue, difficulty walking, problems with balance and co-ordination, and issues with vision.
There is currently no cure, but some treatments can help the symptoms.
Christina took a back seat from the public eye to focus on her health in 2021, but appeared on Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert to discuss her condition.
‘I have 30 lesions on my brain, sores. My biggest one is behind my right eye, so my right eye hurts a lot,’ she told the host, sharing that her vision isn’t affected, but her mobility is.
What is Multiple Sclerosis?
From the NHS, MS is a condition affecting the brain and spinal cord, affecting balance and vision.
It’s a lifelong condition which effects people differently, ranging from mild symptoms to serious disability, and can be progressive.
Symptoms include:
- Fatigue
- Difficulty walking
- Vision problems
- Numbness and tingling, muscle stiffness and spasms
- Balance and co-ordination problems
- Problems thinking, learning and planning
‘We’re prolonging life with these treatments, it doesn’t mean I’ll be around in 10 years. I don’t know. That’s the scary thing about MS, there is no endgame.
‘I hate it so much, I’m so mad about it, you can’t overcome it. You can’t exercise – the second my feet hit my carpet in the morning and they’re hurting as bad as mine do every day, you go f**k it and go back to bed.
‘I’m being the worst MSer. We should be stretching, we should be trying to walk for five minutes. So, I beat myself up about that.’
