Motorway traffic has been hit by long delays after a lorry crashed into a bridge.

A lorry hit an overbridge on the southbound carriageway on the M6 this morning.

Two lanes are closed near Cheshire after the smash and traffic is queueing for five miles.

Drivers are warned of one hour delays, National Highways said.

Two lanes out of four are closed on the M6 southbound between junctions J17 (Sandbach) and J16 (Crewe).

Traffic is expected to return to normal by 10.15am, National Highways warned.

At 5.25am, National Highways warned that three lanes were shut after the crash.

Highways teams were able to open one more lane shortly before 7am.

Recovery work at the scene continues.
