Being part of such a sprawling franchise, it is helpful to know where the show sits in The Walking Dead timeline and how far into the outbreak Daryl Dixon is set – either as a new viewer or as a refresher. However, unlike some stories, Daryl Dixon is relatively straightforward to follow.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2 – Release Date, Cast, Story, Trailer & Everything We Know
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon has started strong, and with season 2 on the way it’s clear AMC has big plans for the Norman Reedus TWD spinoff.
Daryl Dixon Season 1 Begins Very Soon After The Walking Dead’s Ending
Norman Reedus reprises his role as Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, a spin-off series set in a zombie-apocalypse-ravaged France. Daryl fights to survive and find a path back to America. The creator, David Zabel, clarified Daryl Dixon’s timeline concerning the main series The Walking Dead in an interview with Collider. Discussing where season 1 picks up, he also clarifies where in the timeline season 1 is situated:
“It’s the same day, pretty much. Also, because people do ask this sometimes, our entire series really continues off at the end of The Walking Dead. When we met Daryl at the beginning of this show, it was only three or four weeks after he left the Commonwealth on his bike. Now, we’re only two months or three months after the end of The Walking Dead.”
The Walking Dead ended in 2023, meaning Daryl Dixon takes place in 2023—2024. Whereas other spinoffs have confused the timeline, this means Daryl Dixon is more straightforward in continuing chronologically after the events of The Walking Dead finale. Further, it can work as a standalone show for those who haven’t seen The Walking Dead – although it’s beneficial to know Daryl’s background, he gets set up at the beginning of season 1, explaining he’s from the Commonwealth in the U.S.
How Far Into The Walking Dead’s Apocalypse Daryl Dixon Takes Place
The series introduces an entirely new cast of characters.
Daryl Dixon season 1 is set 12 years after the outbreak and three or four weeks after Daryl left The Walking Dead on a confusing spinoff mission. The spinoff transports Daryl to France, the epicenter of the zombie outbreak, where he must unravel the mystery of his arrival. Isolated from the main series’ characters, Daryl embarks on a new chapter in his story, exploring the origins of the apocalypse while forging his own path. Except for Daryl and a brief appearance by a familiar face, the series introduces an entirely new cast of characters.
Season 2 of Daryl Dixon was filmed in France, just like season 1, so it looks like the upcoming season will continue Daryl’s story in Europe. It will also feature a major character from The Walking Dead – so, whereas viewers could get away with watching season 1 as a standalone, it’s recommended to catch up on the original series while waiting for season 2. The payoff for Daryl’s emotional development throughout the show and his background before the outbreak is well worth the watch before the next installment of The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.
