A fourth Bridget Jones movie is officially happening, and a recent tease confirms the biggest concern about one of the main characters – but it will be for the benefit of the movie. Back in 2001, Sharon Maguire’s rom-com Bridget Jones’s Diary introduced the world to Bridget Jones (Reneé Zellweger), a 32-year-old single woman living in London. Tired of her lifestyle, she became determined to improve herself and looked for love, and she ended up in a love triangle with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) and Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant), who was also her boss.
The success of Bridget Jones’s Diary led to two sequels that continued Bridget’s search for love and her relationship with Mark Darcy. Bridget Jones’s Baby seemed to have given Bridget her happy ending after yet another love triangle with Darcy, but instead of Cleaver, it was billionaire Jack Qwant (Patrick Dempsey), who she suspected could have been the father of her baby. At the end of Bridget Jones’s Baby, Bridget and Darcy finally got married and formed a family, but Bridget’s happiness will be disrupted in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy, as its saddest storyline has been confirmed.
Bridget Jones 4 Is Already Making A Horrible $743 Million Mistake
A fourth entry in the Bridget Jones series is currently in development, but the movie has already made a rather questionable decision.
Hugh Grant’s Bridget Jones 4 Tease Confirms Darcy’s Death
Bridget Jones 4 Was Suspected To Include Darcy’s Death
Hugh Grant teased that Bridget Jones 4 will be “very moving” but also funny, as it’s based on Bridget Jones’ creator Helen Fielding’s life.
After skipping Bridget Jones’s Baby due to creative differences, Hugh Grant is coming back in Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy. The official announcement for Bridget Jones 4 included some cast reveals, such as the return of Zellweger, Grant, and Emma Thompson and the addition of Chiwetel Ejiofor and Leo Woodall. Colin Firth’s absence raised concerns, more so when looking at the plot of the Mad About the Boy novel that will serve as the basis for the movie – and those concerns have now been confirmed by Grant.
Speaking to People, Grant teased that Bridget Jones 4 will be “very moving” but also funny, as it’s based on Bridget Jones’ creator Helen Fielding’s life. Grant mentioned the story is partly based on Fielding’s experience bringing up two children by herself after her husband’s passing, and that’s what Bridget will be going through in Mad About The Boy – with the added bonus of Bridget trying to get back into the world of dating, which has changed a lot since she got married.
The Mad About Book reveals Bridget is now a single mother of two who is doing her best to re-enter the dating scene.
The Mad About The Boy book is set 14 years after the events of The Edge of Reason and reunites with a now 51-year-old Bridget, who still keeps a diary. The book reveals Darcy died five years prior, so Bridget became a single mother of two who is now doing her best to re-enter the dating scene in a world where texting and social media are now key to dating. Grant’s tease confirms Darcy’s death and Bridget’s new challenges as a widow and single mother, and while it will be sad to not have Darcy around, this will be beneficial to Bridget and the movie.
Why Bridget Jones 4 Being More Emotional Is Better For Bridget & The Movie Series
Bridget Jones Isn’t The Same From The Past Movies
The tragedy of Darcy’s death will have to force Bridget to mature a lot more.
The Bridget Jones movies blended romance, drama, and comedy as Bridget navigated the dating scene and found herself in love triangles. Even when catching up with an older Bridget in Bridget Jones’s Baby, the movie kept the comedy and naivety of the character, but the tragedy of Darcy’s death will have to force Bridget to mature a lot more. Without Darcy, Bridget Jones 4 can explore a different side of Bridget as a mother and widow and as she processes her grief, as well as her decision to date again in a world completely different from the one she knew before her marriage.
If Bridget Jones: Mad About The Boy is the final chapter in the Bridget Jones movie series, it has to be emotional and push Bridget to change and improve in different ways than she did when the series began. Even though Bridget didn’t get her happy ending with Darcy as she and viewers expected, she can still have it in different ways.
