A chunk of ice fell from an airplane and struck a family’s pet goat to death.

The freak accident happened around 9.30am on Monday as Cassidy Lewis was in her home in Eagle Mountain, Utah.

Lewis said she heard a loud bang and that her entire house shook.

She dashed outside and saw her animals reacting in shock.

‘Roosters were freaking out, the horses were going crazy,’ Lewis told KUTV.

Lewis then saw a large hole through the roof of a shed where she kept her goats. One of the goats was hurt and bleeding.

Beneath the hole on the ground were ice chunks.

‘It was at least a basketball-sized piece of ice, I would assume, especially because the size of the hole and how much ice there was on the ground,’ said Lewis.

Lewis was initially confused and thought it may have been an explosion.

Images from the scene showed ice on the roof next to a hole and the interior of the shed punctured through the top.

Arriving law enforcement officials came up with only one plausible explanation – that the ice had fallen from a plane.

‘He just said that we are below a flight path and it could have been ice from an airplane, which I had no idea could even happen,’ Lewis said.

Lewis took her goat to a veterinarian, who said it could not be saved. The pet was euthanized.

She has contacted the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Salt Lake City International Airport asking them to investigate the incident.

Lewis said the FAA told her they are looking into which plane the ice may have dropped from.

Her home is on the flight path to the airport.

‘Honestly, every time I hear a plane go by, I’m thinking like, it’s made me a little bit nervous about it happening again,’ she said.

‘We’re just very unlucky apparently to have it hit us.’

It is not common for ice drop from planes in the US. However, it does happen and a few instances have been reported.
