IPOB Leader Nnamdi Kanu Seeks Negotiation With Nigerian Government

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu has indicated readiness to negotiate with the Nigerian government.

Kanu’s lawyer, Alloy Ejimakor, informed the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that his client wishes to pursue negotiations under Section 17 of the Federal High Court Act.

This section empowers the court “to promote reconciliation among parties thereto and encourage and facilitate the amicable settlement thereof”.

This announcement came after Kanu submitted two applications: a form 49 and an objection to the court’s jurisdiction. Ejimakor indicated that if these applications are rejected, they will push for the court to activate Section 17.

The Federal Government’s lawyer, Adegboyega Awomolo, countered by stating he lacked the authority to negotiate on behalf of the government. He advised Kanu to approach the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

Justice Binta Nyako, presiding over the case, emphasised the court’s role in adjudicating cases, not acting as a mediator.

Kanu has been detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) since his arrest in Kenya in June 2021. He is currently facing terrorism-related charges brought against him by the Nigerian government.
