Taylor Sheridan’s seven-time collaborator, James Jordan, explains how Landman will be different from the creator’s other shows. Based on the Boomtown podcast and written by the Yellowstone creator, Landman takes a deep dive into the oil business at the heart of West Texas. The series’ first episode will air on Sunday, November 17 on Paramount+ and stars Billy Bob Thornton in the lead role as Tommy Norris alongside Demi Moore and Jon Hamm. Jordan has starred in a dozen of Sheridan’s TV projects, including Yellowstone, 1883, and Mayor of Kingstown.
In a group interview with Screen Rant, Jordan teased what separates Landman from the rest of Sheridan’s projects. The actor explained that the show is another “frontier” and “unexplored world” that journeys into the unknown. The same spirit is also reflected in the filming process, where they filmed what was written in the script “originally” and told their truth. Read his comment below:
You know, it all starts with Taylor’s words, his scripts. We shoot the first draft most of the time they come polished. There’s adjustments here or there on the day, guys, but we’re shooting what he wrote originally. So, it starts with the page and starts with the script, and then under his excellent direction, and then working with these fantastic folks here, and then Billy Bob and Ali and and Mr. Hamm, and all those fine folks, you just show up the set and hit your mark and tell the truth and then hope it attracts an audience. We think this one will, because, of course, it’s another Taylor Sheridan world, unexplored world, another frontier. And when you explore a frontier, you’re exploring the unknown, and we want folks to come along for the ride with us.
Jordan also revealed that Sheridan “flexes that funny bone” with Landman, and it’s going to “surprise folks.” Check out what he said below:

Reviews for the new Taylor Sheridan show are rolling in ahead of its premiere. Sheridan is known for gaining traction and viewers’ love over time, but the first season of his show has a trend of receiving low critical scores. However, this isn’t the case with the new Paramount+ series. Landman debuts with an 81% critical approval rate on Rotten Tomatoes, granting the show an official “fresh” status and breaking the creator’s season 1 curse.

Having humor in characters’ lines also means that the show could potentially be more character-centered in comparison to 1883.The Yellowstone prequel tells the story of the Duttons crossing the Great Plains in the hope of finding a land to settle that would give them a better future. While it features a group of immigrants, it hardly dives into those characters and their culture.
The show about the oil business will be different aside from the ensemble cast seen in 1883 and other Sheridan series. Humor is missing from Sheridan’s previous frontier show, and by having it, viewers can connect to the characters better. With everything being said, Landman sounds like the whole deal.
