Jeremy Clarkson has conceded he’s failed with a specific goal he had for his new pub.

Last month, the Clarkson’s Farm star opened his Cotswolds pub The Farmer’s Dog, which reportedly cost £1,000,000.

Despite facing ‘massive struggles’ before opening the doors, hundreds of people lined up for hours to be some of the first customers when it opened.

However, a few weeks on, Jeremy has revealed his attempts to only sell products ‘grown or reared in Britain’, he came across some challenges.

On the business’ website, Jeremy wrote an explainer about how he was unable to fulfil that aim.

‘I have tried my absolute hardest to make sure that every single thing you consume in The Farmer’s Dog was grown or reared by British farmers. And I have failed,’ he shared.

‘Yes, the pork, the beef, the lamb and the venison are all British. And so is pretty much everything else. The milk, the butter, the eggs, the vegetables and the fruit. We even cook in British oils.

‘But there have been some problems like, for instance, the simple G&T.’

He continued: ‘You can’t have a pub that doesn’t offer a gin and tonic. But there is quinine in tonic water, and you can’t grow that in Britain. Sure, I could have served gin and water instead, but I didn’t think you’d enjoy it very much. Especially as, instead of a slice of lemon, you’d have been given a slice of turnip, or some potato peelings.

‘You can, however, run a pub that doesn’t serve avocado or Coca-Cola, so we don’t. Instead, we offer you British fizzy drinks made with British grown fruit. And British grown tea. And before you ask, yes, the wine is British too.’

He also added that his own beer brand, Hawkstone, was too ‘obviously’.

He concluded by saying: ‘So, that’s it really. We’re delighted to be doing all we possibly can to support British farming and we’re delighted that you’re here to help us.’

However, before the pub opened, some blasted the potential prices of food and drinks.

When Jeremy shared a picture of his pub’s menu on Instagram without any of the prices, several people theorised the reason might have been because it’s expensive.

According to LadBible, who later listed the prices of the food offered on the menu, some of the mains range in price from £15 for a vegetable and cheddar crumble, to £19 for a Lancashire hot pot.

There are also small dishes on offer, including chicken liver pate with onion chutney for £9 and garlic mushrooms with a poached egg for £8.

Meanwhile Jeremy said a pint would cost £5.50.

On the opening day of The Farmer’s Dog, the Instagram account for the pub also shared several pictures of the interior, revealing how much the merch on sale would cost.

The most expensive item on sale was a Hawkstone jumper for £60, with other items including an apron for £40, a dog bowl for £35 and a bottle opener for £14.

Clarkson’s Farm is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.
