Jude Law looks back on his Captain Marvel character and explains the changes he would have made to the MCU villain. Although Captain Marvel’s MCU journey has been limited in comparison to most of her fellow Avengers, Carol Danvers has proved her worth as one of the most powerful Marvel superheroes in two Avengers movies and two solo outings. Carol Danvers defeated Captain Marvel‘s Yon-Rogg in the 1990s and The Marvels‘ Dar-Benn in 2026.
In an interview with G Q for the magazine’s “Men of the Year” event, actor Jude Law discusses his one-off MCU villain role. Law describes Captain Marvel‘s Yon-Rogg as “a bit dry” and reveals he “wanted to be a bit funnier” in the role. Law also mentions that he likely won’t reprise his MCU role. Although Yon-Rogg got his fair amount of screentime in Captain Marvel, he wasn’t given much to do beyond betraying Carol Danvers and being defeated by her at the end. Read Jude Law’s full comments below:
“Would I do another one? Probably not,” he says. “It was all right. [My character] was a bit dry. I wanted to be a bit funnier. I was hoping to be a bit more of a sort of moustache-twirling villain, and I think I kept coming up with ideas that were not going in this film. And so I just sort of did what I was told.”
Captain Marvel Didn’t Give Jude Law Much To Play With
Captain Marvel provides little information about the source of Yon-Rogg’s motivations. In the movie, Yon-Rogg is deeply invested in controlling Carol Danvers’ abilities, and he displays a strong sense of loyalty to the Kree and the Supreme Intelligence. However, Captain Marvel doesn’t fully explain why Yon-Rogg chooses a villainous path. The fact that Yon-Rogg is only revealed to be Captain Marvel‘s main antagonist in the third act also contributes to the villain’s unremarkable role.

The Marvels Cliffhanger Ending Explained & MCU Future Set-Up Explained
The Marvels tells a fairly straightforward narrative by MCU Multiverse Saga standards, but its exciting ending has big implications for the wider MCU.
In a franchise where villains like Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Josh Brolin’s Thanos have become as famous and beloved as the Avengers themselves, Yon-Rogg’s cold and serious personality fails to stand out. As Jude Law states, Yon-Rogg’s stoic temperament makes him come off “a bit dry.” This flaw is made more evident by Thanos’ franchise-defining appearances in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, released before and after Captain Marvel, respectively.
Our Take On Jude Law’s MCU Villain
Captain Marvel’s Yon-Rogg Missed His Chance To Be An Interesting Villain
While Yon-Rogg must still be alive during The Marvels, he must have lost interest in Carol Danvers after being sent to the Supreme Intelligence by the hero at the end of Captain Marvel. In-universe, it has been around thirty years since Yon-Rogg’s defeat. In that time, Carol Danvers became an Avenger and a cosmic protector. If Yon-Rogg really wanted to take revenge on Captain Marvel, he would have already done it by now. Therefore, it’s unlikely (though not impossible) that Jude Law’s Yon-Rogg will ever return to redeem himself in the MCU.
