Judy Murray has moved to clarify her comments after describing Emma Raducanu’s decision to withdraw from Wimbledon mixed doubles with Andy Murray as ‘astonishing’.

Murray and Raducanu were set to team up on Court One on Saturday afternoon but Raducanu withdrew several hours before citing stiffness in her right wrist.

Raducanu’s decision means it has denied Murray a final chance to appear at Wimbledon and his mother, Judy, appeared to criticise the 21-year-old’s call to withdraw on social media.

Following Raducanu’s announcement, sports presenter Marcus Buckland wrote on X: ‘Astonishing news that Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from her mixed doubles match with Andy Murray. She’s citing soreness in her right wrist.

‘It means Murray has played his last match at Wimbledon. Oh dear!’

In her response to the post, Judy Murray replied: ‘Yes, astonishing.’

After that message went viral, Judy Murray then followed up on Sunday morning by claiming that her response was ‘sarcasm’.

She wrote on X: ‘Not sure anyone understands sarcasm these days.

‘Pretty sure the scheduling (4th match court 1 with a singles following day) will have played a major part in any decision making.’

Raducanu, who won the US Open in 2021, is due to play her Wimbledon fourth-round singles match on Sunday against Lulu Sun.

Last year, she required surgery on both wrists and her ankle, which kept her out for eight months.

Explaining her decision to withdraw from mixed doubles, Raducanu said in a statement: ‘Unfortunately I woke up with some stiffness in my right wrist this morning, so therefore I have decided to make the very tough decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles tonight.
