Kevin Smith’s New Movie Announcement Is The Perfect Return To The Genre That Gave Us Some Of His Best Films

Kevin Smith has announced a new horror movie he’s writing, and it marks the perfect return to the genre that has delivered some of his best and most underrated films. Smith recently released a new episode of his podcast Fat Man Beyond to promote the digital release of his latest film, The 4:30 Movie, a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age comedy set in the ‘80s. During the four-and-a-half-hour podcast, in which Smith broke the record for longest Fat Man Beyond episode to date, he teased the next screenplay he’s working on.

Smith’s next movie is a new Jay and Silent Bob movie, Jay and Silent Bob: Store Wars, in which Jay and Bob get into an intense business rivalry with a fellow weed dispensary. But on Fat Man Beyond, he revealed that he’s already writing the next movie he’ll make after that; Smith describes this script as a horror movie about a Satanic cult that’s essentially his take on Rosemary’s Baby. From Red State to Tusk, Smith has delivered some of his best movies in the horror genre, so this is exciting.

Kevin Smith’s Return To Horror Is Exciting After Red State & Tusk

Smith’s Horror Movies Are Two Of His Best

Smith made his first full-blown horror film in 2011 with Red State. It revolves around three horny teenage boys who get lured into a catfishing scam by a Westboro Baptist Church-style radical religious group. While being held captive at the church, they get swept up in an armed standoff between the churchgoers and a band of ATF agents. Red State was a radical change of pace for Smith, and it maintains a nail-biting intensity from beginning to end.

Smith’s pitch-black comedic sensibility has proven to be perfect for the horror genre, so his return to horror is reason to celebrate.

After Red State, Smith followed it up with an even wilder horror movie. Tusk stars Justin Long as a podcaster and Michael Parks as a mad scientist who surgically transforms him into a walrus. It’s one of the most gonzo, disturbing body horror films ever made, and it’s since earned a much-deserved cult following. Smith’s pitch-black comedic sensibility has proven to be perfect for the horror genre, so his return to horror is reason to celebrate.

A Kevin Smith Version Of Rosemary’s Baby Could Be Great

Smith Has A Penchant For Religious Satire

A Kevin Smith version of Rosemary’s Baby sounds like an amazing movie. There have been a lot of Rosemary’s Baby rip-offs lately, from False Positive to Immaculate to The First Omen to its own official prequel, Apartment 7A. But they’ve all tried to emulate Rosemary’s Baby and failed to match its dread and tension. What gives Smith’s movie the edge is that it won’t just be a copycat; it’ll do its own thing. Smith’s Rosemary’s Baby homage will have a twisted sense of humor — and he already proved with Dogma that he’s adept at satirizing religion.
