While millions evacuated the path of Hurricane Milton as it approached Florida, some people participated in a £54,000 ‘survival challenge’.

Kick streamer Shaun Sharkey, 18, was arrested after breaking into an apartment near Tampa, Florida, which narrowly missed a direct hit from the storm.

Also known as Shoovy, he could be seen gaining access to the building with a screwdriver, in footage broadcast on the live streaming platform, MailOnline reports.

Mr Sharkey was then seen holding a knife beside an open door, before officers could be heard in the building.

One officer said: ‘Get down here, right now! Or I will f**k you up. Get down, get down, put your phone.’

The 18-year-old was then arrested on camera before the video cut out.

He has been charged burglary and resisting an officer, with a £766 bond for the second charge, according to arrest records on the Sarasota Sheriff’s website.

Mr Sharkey, whose Kick channel has been taken down, later claimed on X that it was his friend’s condo.

Another Kick streamer, Adin Ross, has been criticised for offering a £70,000 – or £54,000 – prize for streamers who chased Hurricane Milton.

Mr Ross did not mention Mr Sharkey’s arrest when he addressed the challenge in an X post on Wednesday night.

He said: ‘Listen. $70K was promised to 2 specific streamers. Not everyone, you guys need to get to safety and evacuate. Protect yourselves please it’s not worth it, please.’

Another streamer, Mike Smalls Jr, claimed to have only an air mattress, ramen and an umbrella while live streaming outside on Wednesday night.

He freaked out after being informed Mr Ross would not be paying him the prize money, saying: ‘I’m out here risking my life to feed my family.’

Mr Smalls later appeared on a Kick stream with Mr Ross, who told him: ‘I said I’d give you $10,000 if you found shelter. You found shelter.’

Sharing the clip on X today, Mr Smalls said: ‘Y’all think he really gonna go thru with it?’
