King Charles has passed on his ‘heartfelt congratulations’ to ParalympicsGB and athletes from across the Commonwealth for their ‘numerous successes’ at this summer’s Paris Games.
ParalympicsGB capped off a memorable showing in the French capital by clinching two gold medals on the final day of action across the Channel, with Para-canoeing duo Laura Sugar and Charlotte Henshaw adding to an impressive British haul.
It means Great Britain and Northern Ireland finished second in the medal table – for a third time on the bounce – behind China with a total of 49 golds, 44 silvers and 31 bronzes.
Over 11 days of unforgettable drama, ParalympicsGB secured medals in 18 of the 19 events involving British competitors, while winning eight more golds than in Tokyo three years ago.
‘As this wonderful summer of sport comes to a close in Paris, my wife joins me in sending our heartfelt congratulations to the Paralympian athletes from Great Britain and Northern Ireland – and from across the whole Commonwealth – for their numerous successes at this year’s Games,’ a message shared on the royal family’s official account on X read.
‘Behind every medal won lies a wonderful story of courage, commitment and true talent, matched by a determination that has taken you to the very top.
‘We rejoice in your victories, while saluting and celebrating all those who have taken part, as well as thanking the support teams who play such a special part in your achievements.
‘Your example has succeeded in inspiring, encouraging and lifting the hearts of all. Charles R.’
Penny Briscoe OBE, ParalympicsGB’s Chef de Mission at Paris 2024, said the team’s medal haul was ‘testament to our incredible athletes’ after a ‘special’ Games.
‘ParalympicsGB have achieved so many milestones at these Games, I could not be more proud of every single team member for their fantastic performances across 11 thrilling days of competition here in Paris,’ she said.
‘To finish these Games with 49 gold medals and 124 overall – surpassing what we achieved in Tokyo – is testament to our incredible athletes, coaches and support staff and the years and months of dedicated hard work they all put in.
‘Every Paralympic Games we see competition from around the world getting tougher and tougher, so to return home with so many fantastic performances from across the entire team really is so special.’
She added: ‘The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games have been memorable for so many reasons beyond the amazing performances we have seen on the field of play.
‘The Paris 2024 organisers have provided us with experiences that will live in our hearts forever – from spectacular venues to amazing volunteers, our hosts have made these a Games to remember.’
