An online influencer has been criticised for suggesting tenants should pay whopping extras for ‘small details’ at properties.
The London-based content creator @HeWantsWealth rather enthusiastically shared on X how renters appreciate the ‘small details’ when looking for a home.
Apparently, tenants ‘appreciate’ such details so much they’re willing to pay £100 more a month in rent.
In this case, a plug socket that comes with a USB charging point.
Sharing a before and after of the plug socket, the landlord wrote ‘How it started and how it’s going.
‘These are the small details tenants will appreciate when looking for property to rent and will happily pay the extra £75-100pm for.’
Other users were quick to correct the content creator over what was widely seen as something so basic as to not be worth even thinking about.
One person wrote: ‘STOP! No prospective tenant is paying an extra £100/month because of USB sockets, come on now…’
Another person said: ‘I’d rather pay £100 less a month in rent and use an extension lead, than USB sockets.’
A third added: ‘As a tenant, I would never pay that.’
Some users thought the feature was completely unnecessary altogether.
One person said: ‘Unless it’s closer to a table/sofa/desk, what’s the point of a USB?’
The suggestion from HeWantsWealth comes as rents in the UK capital have hit record highs, with dreams of homeownership becoming ever more distant for people.
Recent research suggests that residential buy-to-let landlords have grown their portfolios in the last 12 months – with a quarter of landlords surveyed by The Mortgage Lender adding at least one property in 2023.
