The Last Of Us Part 3 is not happening any time soon, as developer Naughty Dog reveal a new sci-fi game called Intergalactic at The Game Awards.

After years of speculation, Naughty Dog has finally revealed their next game, and it is indeed a new IP. But rather than the fantasy-based project that had been rumoured it’s a sci-fi title called Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

Judging by the trailer, there’s a very clear 80s influence to the setting, from the faux anime show running on the TV to the fact that main character Jordan A. Mun is listening to the Pet Shop Boys on her CD collection.

There’s only a short section of gameplay shown but the game seems to be third person action game, with Jordan fighting a robot with an impractically large sword. Which suggests a welcome break from the grim and gritty world of The Last Of Us.

There’s a clear Blade Runner vibe to a lot of the trailer but the spaceship you’re flying looks suspiciously like something out of WipEout, although if you look closely enough you can see it’s actually got a Porsche logo on it.

What is going on with the plot isn’t entirely clear but Jordan is apparently a bounty hunter, who seems to be searching for a group called the Five Aces. Apparently, she ends up being stranded on the planet of Sempiria, as she attempts to become ‘the first person in over 600 years to leave its orbit.’

Interestingly, the game’s full name leaked out in February, but since it was just the name nobody knew what it was or that Naughty Dog were involved.

Intergalactic is being directed by The Last Of Us Part 2 co-director (there were actually three) Neil Druckmann and will feature a soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, although we’re not sure any of it was featured in the trailer.

When will Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet be released?

According to The Game Awards presenter and organiser Geoff Keighley, Intergalactic has been in development since 2020, so while no release date was given it shouldn’t be too long until it’s out – hopefully no later than 2026 or 2027.

Naughty Dog has previously said that it has ‘multiple’ single-player games in development, so it shouldn’t be a case of having to wait until Intergalactic is out until you get to see the next one.

The Last Of Us Part 3 is bound to pop up at some point but what else they might be working on is currently a mystery – it’s more than possible that the rumours about a fantasy game are actually true, it’s just that Intergalactic is coming out first.

Although none of the team appeared on stage, at any point, Intergalactic was Naughty Dog’s second annoucement at The Game Awards, with The Last Of Us Part 2 on PC being confirmed for an April 3 launch – just in time for the second series of the TV show, which will be at least a partial adaptation of the game.
