By 2024, the information and communication technology (ICT) landscape is poised for a major transformation. Huawei has set its sights on revolutionizing the industry through 5.5G network equipment. The famous telecom giant shared this exciting reveal at the 5G Advanced Forum held at MWC Shanghai 2023.
The rapid progress of 5G deployment in the past four years has already reaped great financial benefits. As it stands, there are more than 260 commercial 5G networks globally, with more than 1.2 billion users and 115 million gigabit F5G users. With service and content models constantly innovating, the need for powerful 5G network capabilities is becoming more and more urgent. This brings us to the threshold of the 5.5G era, which is widely considered a milestone in the evolution of 5G.
Huawei 5.5G
Huawei’s vision for this 5.5G era includes a comprehensive solution integrating 5.5G, F5.5G and Net 5.5G technologies. This comprehensive solution promises to:
- Protect previous 5G operator investments
- Tenfold improvement in network performance
- Provides speeds up to 10 Gigabit peak downlink and peak Gigabit uplink speeds
- Open a market of 100 billion IoT connections by using passive IoT.
Yang Chubin, Director of Huawei and Head of ICT Products & Solutions, expressed optimism about the upcoming technological and commercial expansion of the 5.5G era. It was announced that in 2024, Huawei will unveil a full range of commercial 5.5G network equipment, in line with a well-defined benchmarking schedule.
Huawei has been working tirelessly together with industry players on the research and development of key 5.5G technologies. This collaboration has made significant progress, especially for technologies such as Extremely Large Antenna Array (ELAA), Flexible Spectrum Access, and Passive IoT, all of which are critical to achieving the ambitious network performance goals of the 5.5G Era.
5.5G networks of the future
While the industry is still in the early stages of articulating a vision for 6G and initiating related research into key technologies, many see 5.5G as a cornerstone for future development.
Moreover, Huawei has demonstrated its commitment to continuously enhancing network capabilities and availability by applying indigenous AI technologies to 5.5G core networks. This will allow AI capabilities to be delivered to the networking periphery, thus serving different industries more effectively. This is in line with the promise of 5.5G Net, which provides 10GbE access, ultra-fast transmission, and microsecond-level latency across AI networks, and serves as the foundation for the next-generation network of industrial digitization.
