When it comes to getting yourself elected, having your name right in your campaign materials is usually a no-brainer.
Yet it seems that Reform UK may need to hire a couple of new proofreaders for Lee Anderson.
Keen-eyed social media users have spotted that the former Conservative MP is referred to as ‘Lee Andersin’ in his campaign leaflets.
To make matters worse, Mr Andersin didn’t seem to notice his mistake as he posted an Instagram video of himself posting leaflets around Ashfield yesterday.
He wrote: ‘On the streets. Great reception out on the streets of Ashfield today.’
The footage shows that, where it says how to find the politician on Facebook, it says: ‘Lee Andersin MP.’
In response, Ina wrote on X: ‘They actually spelt your name wrong. On your election leaflet.’
Another user, Chris Watkinson, added: ‘That’s Reform UK for you! Don’t they know how to use spell check tool?’
A user replied: ‘Spell check is woke.’
Mr Andersin defected to the right-wing Reform UK party after the Tory party suspended his whip after he refused to apologise for saying Islamists controlled London and the Labour Party.
Who is Lee Anderson?
Until his suspension, Lee Anderson had been a Conservative MP for Ashfield in Nottinghamshire since 2019.
He was deputy chair of the Tory party from February 2023 to January this year.
Before becoming an MP he worked as a coal miner and for Citizens Advice Bureau before serving as a Labour Party councillor in Ashfield from 2015.
He defected to the Conservative Party in 2018 and was a Tory ward councillor in Mansfield from 2019 to 2021, alongside working as an MP.
Speaking after a pro-Palestine protest outside parliament, the former deputy chair of the Tory party said Islamists had ‘got control’ of Mr Khan and had ‘given our capital city away to his mates’.
Senior Tory MP Sajid Javid, meanwhile, branded Mr Andersin’s comments as ‘ridiculous’, while Tory peer Gavin Barwell, who was Theresa May’s chief of staff in Number 10, called the remarks a ‘despicable slur’.
Leader of the Conservative party at City Hall, Neil Garratt, said he had ‘no shortage of criticisms of Mayor Khan’ but added ‘he is not an Islamist, he is not in the pockets of Islamists, and I completely disagree with anyone who says otherwise’.
Mr Andersin’s comments appeared to be about those made by former home secretary Suella Braverman in the Daily Telegraph, in which she said ‘the truth is that the Islamists, the extremists and the antisemites are in charge now’.
He said he did not ‘actually believe that these Islamists have got control of our country’ but he did believe they have ‘got control of Khan and they’ve got control of London’, and that they have ‘got control of Starmer as well’.
Lee Anderson has been contacted for comment.
