Famous director Martin Scorsese has a new film in the works about the popular singer Frank Sinatra, and the casting indicates the continuation of a four-movie trend between Scorsese and actor Leonardo DiCaprio. In 1967, Martin Scorsese directed his first film, Who’s That Knocking On My Door, and since then, he has been at the helm of 25 more movies, including 2023’s Best Picture nominee, Killers of the Flower Moon. Over the years, Scorsese has had certain actors return continuously in his films including Robert DeNiro and Leonardo DiCaprio, however their connections run deeper than just casting.
As reported by Variety, Martin Scorsese is in the midst of working on a biopic about legendary crooner, Frank Sinatra. Though the film is not quite official yet, as Sinatra’s daughter, Tina, has not given her blessing, Scorsese is still apparently putting together the project. This includes a star-studded cast. Leonardo DiCaprio is said to be playing Sinatra, while Jennifer Lawrence will take on the role of his second wife, Ava Gardner. At this point, several studios are lining up to fund the next Scorsese movie, despite its very early development. Notably, this movie would continue an interesting Scorsese/DiCaprio trend.
The 1 Martin Scorsese & Robert De Niro Record That Leonardo DiCaprio Will Probably Never Beat
DiCaprio and De Niro are Scorsese’s two biggest collaborators, but the Flower Moon star will struggle to eclipse one record held by his co-star.
Martin Scorsese’s Frank Sinatra Movie Would Be His Fourth With Leonardo DiCaprio Playing A Real Person
DiCaprio has starred as real people in three Scorsese movies
If Leonardo DiCaprio truly does star as Frank Sinatra in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming biopic, then this will be his fourth time playing a real person in a Scorsese film. While DiCaprio has been in a number of Scorsese movies throughout his career, there are three in particular wherein he plays people that existed in real life. These movies include 2004’s The Aviator, 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, and 2023’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
It seems that Scorsese not only enjoys DiCaprio starring in his films, but also trusts that he can accurately portray real people.
Notably, DiCaprio has earned praise for each of these movies in which he has played real people. All three films have been lauded, not just for Scorsese’s work as director, but for DiCaprio’s performances as well. Interestingly, each of these characters are also quite similar. Howard Hughes, Jordan Belfort, and Ernie Burkhart are each men who saw quite a bit of success or power, and ultimately, were corrupted by what they had. In some ways, Sinatra could be the same. It seems that Scorsese and DiCaprio have both found their niches within each other.
DiCaprio & Scorsese’s $407 Million Hit Proves Their Frank Sinatra Movie Will Be Great
Wolf of Wall Street proves Sinatra’s potential
It isn’t just Leonardo DiCaprio’s ability to play troubled men that ensures the Sinatra biopic will be good. The Wolf of Wall Street actually is a good comparison. Although Jordan Belfort and Frank Sinatra had very different lives, careers, and intentions, the two can be paired by the fact that they are both highly popular and highly controversial figures. Though they could do amazing things, they often caused trouble as well, particularly within the public eye. Ultimately, the fact that The Wolf of Wall Street was so successful means that Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio are on the right track.
