The House of Representatives has passed the N70,000 minimum wage bill, following a request by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The bill sought to amend the National Minimum Wage Act, No. 8, 2019 to increase the national minimum wage and reduce the time for periodic review of the national minimum wage from five to three years.
In a letter to that effect, as read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, President Tinubu appealed to the Lawmakers to expedite the passage of the minimum wage bill to ensure immediate implementation for the benefit of Nigerian workers.
The House of Representatives has also passed a bill seeking to alter the Nigeria Police Act, to enable a person appointed to the office of Inspector General of Police to remain in office until the expiration of the term stipulated in his or her letter of appointment.
The President in another letter asked for an amendment to the Nigeria Police Act in accordance with section 58 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.
Details of the bill showed that “The Nigeria Police Act, 2020 (“Principal Act”) is amended as set out in this Act; Section 18 of the Principal Act is amended by adding a new subsection (8A) -(8A) Notwithstanding the provisions of sub-section (8) of this section, any person appointed to the office of Inspector-General of Police shall remain in office until the end of the term stipulated in the letter of appointment in line with the provisions of Section 7(6) of this Act.
It may be cited as the Nigeria Police Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
