Live-Action Gear 5 Luffy Is Still Far Away, But I Cant Wait To See This Other One Piece Transformation

Summary

  • Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation is unlikely to appear soon in the One Piece live-action show.
  • Gear 2 might happen in a potential One Piece season 4 or 5, much sooner than Gear 5.
  • A new character in season 2 will have a significant impact on Luffy’s future and the story’s endgame.

Netflix’s live-action One Piece show was very successful and will return for season 2, and there is a Monkey D. Luffy One Piece moment coming up that I can’t wait to see regardless of how long it takes. Released in August 2023, One Piece season 1 covered the East Blue saga. Changes were made to the source material, as the manga and anime are too long for any Netflix show to realistically adapt within its likely timeframe. Nonetheless, I’m counting down the episodes till Luffy’s best techniques happen in live-action.

Luffy has transformations that let him access greater power, each coming with its array of techniques. As an anime watcher, I’m obsessed with one of Luffy’s intriguing powers that came to light in an episode that aired at around the same time as season 1 of the live-action show. This is, of course, Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation, based on the Sun God Nika. Since this debuted relatively recently, I’m not expecting to see it in the Netflix live-action anime adaptation. However, there is another Luffy transformation that should happen within a reasonable timeframe.

A new character destined to appear in Netflix’s One Piece season 2 will have a major role to play in Luffy’s future – and the story’s overall endgame.

Luffy’s Coolest Transformation Would Take 21 Seasons To Happen In Live-Action

Gear 5 Luffy Is A Relatively Recent Addition To The Story

With One Piece season 1 adapting relatively few arcs in the grander scheme of the anime and manga, Luffy’s Gear 5 moment is still far away. This is despite the compression of the timing of the anime, as each live-action episode represents perhaps 5-7 anime episodes. Overall, season 1 adapted perhaps 50 anime episodes at most. Luffy’s Gear 5 transformation premiered in episode 1071 of the anime. As such, it may not be until roughly season 21 that we would get to see Luffy use Gear 5, although it’s likely that Netflix will compress the story into fewer seasons.

One Piece
season 2 doesn’t have a release date yet.

Luffy’s First Major Transformation Should Happen In One Piece Season 4

It Shouldn’t Be Too Long Until Luffy Can Use Gear Two

With One Piece season 2 coming up, it seems more feasible to look forward to another of my favorite of Luffy’s transformations instead. Luffy’s Gear 2 is one of the transformations I’m most excited about, and it should not take too long for it to happen. Of course, how the show will adapt the anime and manga going forward hasn’t been fully confirmed. However, Luffy uses Gear 2 in episode 272 of the anime, which is a lot closer to the start of the story than Gear 5’s 1071.

Given that Luffy’s Gear 2 transformation happens in episode 272, and each season may adapt roughly 50 anime episodes, it stands to reason that we may be graced with a live-action Gear 2 in season 4 or 5. The anime episode, “Luffy is in Sight! Gather at the Courthouse Plaza” is a standout episode, whereby Luffy uses Gear 2 on Blueno, who never stood a chance. One Piece‘s future beyond season 2 remains to be announced, but compared to a hypothetical season 21 that may never happen, I can at least look forward to seasons 4 and 5 with relative confidence.
