Luffy Won’t Have One Piece Season 2’s Most Powerful Devil Fruit, But There’s A Big Twist

Figuring out which character ate the most powerful Devil Fruit in live-action One Piece will get a lot more complicated in season 2. During the first season of Netflix’s live-action anime adaptation, only two characters with Devil Fruit powers were featured: Iñaki Godoy’s Monkey D. Luffy and Jeff Ward’s Buggy the Clown. Both Devil Fruits have their advantages, but Luffy’s is clearly superior. The ability to turn one’s body into rubber offers a dizzying array of attacking and defensive options, whereas Buggy’s power to split his body is far more limited in scope.

The relative drought of Devil Fruit characters in One Piece season 1 only made Luffy seem more formidable. Enemies were immediately threatened upon realizing the Straw Hat captain had eaten one of the world’s infamous cursed fruits, and Luffy’s skill at wielding the Gum-Gum Fruit meant villains were generally right to be concerned. That will all change in One Piece season 2. Not only will Devil Fruits become remarkably common after the Going Merry enters the Grand Line, Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit will no longer be the strongest – at least, from a certain point of view.

Devil Fruit Types In One Piece Explained

There Are 3 Main Types Of Devil Fruit In One Piece

Before diving into the specific Devil Fruits that will appear in One Piece season 2, it is imperative to understand the various types available. Since Luffy and Buggy have thus far been the only Devil Fruit-users in town, Netflix’s first season largely glossed over this topic, but the distinction between fruits will become crucial as more high-ranking pirates and marines are introduced.

Both Luffy and Buggy use paramecia-type Devil Fruits, the broadest and most common category. Paramecia fruits grant the user a specific ability, whether that be Luffy’s rubbery body or the power to create wax like upcoming live-action One Piece villain Mr. 3. The second type of Devil Fruit is a zoan, which allows the user to transform into a creature. The third main Devil Fruit category in One Piece is the logia type. These are similar to paramecia, but rather than simply granting an ability, a logia fruit completely transforms the eater’s body into a specific element such as fire, lightning, or smoke.

Type Of Devil Fruit

Explanation

Examples

Paramecia

Grants an ability

Luffy, Buggy, Mr. 3

Zoan

Grants a transformation

Chopper

Logia

Turns user into an element

Crocodile, Smoker, Ace

While paramecia, zoan, and logia cover the three major Devil Fruit classifications, there is one important subcategory: the mythical zoan. While these function the exact same way as regular zoan Devil Fruits, they are far rarer and far more powerful, transforming the user into a legendary creature of great renown.

Crocodile Will Have One Piece Season 2’s Most Powerful Devil Fruit, Not Luffy

The Gum-Gum Fruit Will Be Outdone In One Piece Season 2

Of all the many Devil Fruits One Piece will introduce in season 2, Crocodile’s logia-type Sand-Sand Fruit will be the most powerful. Logia Devil Fruits are generally considered more desirable than paramecia, as the effect on the user’s body is all-encompassing. Luffy can stretch his body like rubber, but he can still be cut, punched, and blown up. Crocodile’s Sand-Sand Fruit, however, turns the villain into literal sand, ensuring virtually any attack will pass harmlessly through him. Unlike Buggy merely splitting his body into chunks, Crocodile’s body is a flowing, transient cloud of sand, making his defense vastly harder to penetrate.

As Luffy’s voyage on the Grand Line begins, he will rapidly learn that being able to stretch isn’t as novel or useful as it was.

Logia Devil Fruits also come with a range of other benefits. Crocodile’s Devil Fruit lets him whip up sandstorms, use sand as a physical weapon, and even drain moisture from both his environment and his enemies. Blending the gifts of paramecia with the transformative nature of zoan, logia-types are arguably the ultimate Devil Fruits, and a cut above anything Luffy encountered during One Piece season 1. On paper, therefore, Luffy’s Gum-Gum Fruit is vastly outgunned, and he will need to rely more on strategy and wits than rubbery limbs when fighting Crocodile in One Piece season 2.

If Ace appears in
One Piece
season 2, his Devil Fruit could be argued as stronger than Crocodile’s.

Oddly, Luffy doesn’t even possess the second-best Devil Fruit in One Piece season 2. In addition to Crocodile, a second zoan-user villain will emerge in the form of Smoker, the marine teased by One Piece season 1’s ending.

I’m Fine If One Piece Season 2 Breaks Canon If It Means More Of Joe Manganiello’s Crocodile

Joe Manganiello is playing “Mr.0” in Netflix’s One Piece, and I wouldn’t mind the live-action show breaking canon to make the most of this casting.

He may not be as adept at using it as Crocodile, but Smoker’s Smoke-Smoke Fruit turns him into a literal cloud of smog. As Luffy’s voyage on the Grand Line begins, he will rapidly learn that being able to stretch isn’t as novel or useful as it was while traversing the islands of East Blue, and those in higher positions of power have munched on higher grades of Devil Fruit.

There’s A Twist – Luffy’s Devil Fruit Isn’t What It Seems In One Piece

Arguably The Biggest Twist Of The One Piece Manga So Far

Luffy in Gear Fifth form holding out his arms in One Piece.

There is no doubt that Luffy’s Devil Fruit will feel more mundane in One Piece season 2, especially when the Straw Hat captain is compared against Crocodile and Smoker. A solid Gum-Gum attack was usually enough to win any fight during the first leg of Netflix’s adaptation, but Luffy can no longer bank on having that Devil Fruit advantage.

Luffy has only tapped into a tiny fraction of his Devil Fruit’s true power.

At least, that is how it will look when One Piece season 2 airs. Luffy’s attacks will seem less effective, his abilities less astounding, and his anatomical flexibility less crucial to victory. In truth, however, Luffy’s Devil Fruit will still be the most powerful in One Piece season 2 – Luffy himself just won’t be aware of that.

Many arcs after Luffy faces Crocodile, the One Piece manga reveals how the existence of a paramecia-type Gum-Gum Fruit is actually a lie perpetuated by the World Government. What Luffy really ate was the mythical zoan Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. Rather than turning Luffy’s body stretchy, the Devil Fruit transformed him into the legendary Sun God known as Nika, who possessed a rubber body.

One Piece
season 2 will begin around chapter 96 of the manga. The reveal about Luffy’s Devil Fruit happens in chapter 1044.

As of One Piece season 2, Luffy has only tapped into a tiny fraction of his Devil Fruit’s true power. While his skills will begin to look less significant when One Piece‘s live-action adaptation returns, he does still secretly have the rarest, most powerful Devil Fruit in the show – even more so than Crocodile. Even the One Piece manga is yet to confirm the Nika fruit’s full history and importance, but it is even plausible that Luffy ate the most potent Devil Fruit in the entire franchise.

One Piece Season 2 Will Make Devil Fruits Way Less Important

The Fighter Makes The Fruit, Not The Other Way Around

Irrespective of the secret behind Luffy’s Devil Fruit and which character ate the most powerful fruit, season 2 will herald a shift in the One Piece landscape, making Devil Fruits as a whole way less important. Throughout One Piece season 1, the Devil Fruit was presented as a source of terror on the high seas, and anyone who had eaten one was immediately marked out as a character to be taken seriously. As more and more Devil Fruit-users crawl out of the woodwork in One Piece season 2, it will become evident that is not the case.

All 8 Ways One Piece Season 2 Will Be Different From Season 1

Netflix’s One Piece adaptation is entering its second season, which is expected to differ from the show’s first season in eight massive ways.

Plenty of average fighters have eaten Devil Fruits, and plenty of strong characters have never so much as sniffed one. As the One Piece story continues, the chief source of strength in the franchise transitions from Devil Fruits to a power known as haki. Haki is an umbrella term for a range of offensive and defensive abilities, most of which can be attained and honed through hard work and practice. By the time Luffy fights Kaido much further into the narrative, he learns that the world’s truly great pirates rely not on Devil Fruits but master their haki instead.

Type Of Haki

Explanation

Conqueror’s

Using the power of aura against an enemy. Users must be born with this ability.

Observation

The ability to predict attacks. Enhanced senses.

Armament

Coating body parts and weapons in a hard armor that even hurts logia-type Devil Fruit-users.

One Piece season 2 might be too soon for haki to be mentioned, but it will mark the beginning of a period where possessing Devil Fruit powers is not a big deal. Luffy will begin to be judged less on the amazing things his body can do, and more on the amazing feats he accomplishes along the Grand Line.
