When comedian Maisie Adam was left in bits when she found her grandmother’s birth certificate.
Sadly, the 30-year-old stand-up comic and her family were preparing for her grandmother’s funeral, but there was a distinct change of tone when they found her great grandmother’s birth certificate and read the small print.
It’s safe to say Maisie’s late grandmother offered them ‘one last laugh’ when they discovered the comedian’s great, great grandmother’s name on the tattered document.
Maisie took to X in a post that’s since gone viral, as she wrote: ‘In true form, my Nanna’s given us one last laugh…as my Dad’s been sorting her funeral he found her Mum’s birth certificate and therefore discovered the name of HER Nanna.’
In the post, Maisie attached the birth certificate which showed the name was Fanny Fudge. But it gets better, as Fanny Fudge was formerly Fanny Pile.
‘Excuse me while I get up off the floor to catch my breath,’ Maisie added, explaining how she could never write anything as funny in her stand up as this simple, perfect, discovery.
Steph McGovern of Steph’s Packed Lunch was also howling, as she commented, ‘This is BRILLIANT!! There are definitely funny bones in the family,’ along with some laughing emoji.
X user Stevie Watson said what everyone was thinking and wrote: ‘Not sure which was the better name, Fanny Fudge or Fanny Pile.’
Meanwhile, others shared the Fannys they’ve met – or heard of – along the way.
‘I once worked in libraries and we had a training session on genealogy: colleague presented about her relative called Fanny Pack. Several of us were unable to maintain our composure whilst she discussed that…’ shared Sarah Evans.
‘I had a Fanny Butter and a Fanny Marsh in my tree,’ offered up @birchsong, while @_MrsJJohnson blew the whole thing out of the water with her anecdote, as she wrote: ‘My grandmas best friend at school was called Fanny Fish.’
This comes after the legendary moment on The Chase when Bradley Walsh cracked up at one of the answers to a question on the game show.
Forced to read out Fanny Chmelar – who is a German former ski racer – the presenter simply can’t get the words out for laughing. The internet remembers.
Despite Maisie’s declaration that this is now her funniest thing, she’s actually very funny and has starred in Have I Got News For You, Mock the Week, and enjoyed a run of festive appearances this year appearing in The Unofficial Science of Indiana Jones and Sports Funniest 2023 with Greg James.
Maisie caught up with Metro.co.uk last year in December, and revealed that her ‘most frustrating’ bugbear about the stand up comedy industry is the lack of accessibility and its London-centric mentality.
‘The North West has a fantastic circuit. Scotland has a fantastic circuit,’ she said.
‘But it’s frustrating that if you decide to give comedy a go and you live in London, you are instantly at an advantage.’
She added: ‘I used to get the Megabus down, do like 6 gigs across the weekend and come back up for work Monday.
‘That’s what somebody who’s not London-based is facing at the start of the open mic circuit as opposed to somebody who lives near the capital, and that stays the same as you progress.’
