Mason Greenwood’s hopes of playing for Manchester United have been boosted after claims the squad are happy for him to return.

The striker has spent the season on loan at Getafe, where he’s found a new lease of life.

United decided Greenwood’s future was best served away from the club following charges of rape and domestic assault against the striker were dropped in 2023.

However, Greenwood’s loan expires in July and United’s new co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, said last month that a fresh decision would be taken on the forward’s future.

While Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are both interested in Greenwood, United could look to reintegrate the striker – as was their initial plan last summer.

And the Sun say United’s squad are keen for Greenwood to return as they know what he can bring to the team.

Their stance is said to be purely a ‘football’ decision and Greenwood’s return could invoke unrest with the women’s team, who are said to be opposed.

Greenwood last played for the club in January 2022.

United value him at around £50m and his status as an academy product could help to ease the club’s Financial Fair Play limitations.

The club plan to sign a centre-back, left-back, central midfielder and back-up forward in the transfer window this summer.

There remains much uncertainty about Erik ten Hag’s future, despite the thrilling 4-3 FA Cup quarter-final win against Liverpool on Sunday.
