Mark Wahlberg’s New Thriller Gives Away Its Big Twist In The Trailer

Summary

  • Mark Wahlberg’s upcoming thriller, Flight Risk, has already spoiled its biggest twist in the trailer.
  • The movie could have been more impactful if it maintained ambiguity around Wahlberg’s character.
  • Despite the twist reveal, Flight Risk is still anticipated due to Mel Gibson’s direction and Wahlberg’s role as a villain.

Mark Wahlberg‘s upcoming thriller is exciting, but it seems strange that its trailer has already spoiled its biggest twist. Even though Mark Wahlberg is better known for his action and comedy roles in movies, like Ted, Daddy’s Home, and Uncharted, the actor has many diverse movie roles under his belt. For instance, in 2010’s The Fighter, he perfectly embodied a struggling boxer who had to break away from his elder brother’s shadow to find success in his sport.

Similarly, in Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, he took the challenging role of Staff Sergeant Sean Dignam. In 2022’s Father Stu, he further diversified his acting portfolio by convincingly portraying the titular priest. As the storyline of his upcoming movie suggests, Mark Wahlberg will again put his acting abilities to the test by playing a villain. While this new look at Mark Wahlberg’s acting forte makes it hard not to look forward to the film, the fact that its trailer reveals its biggest twist slightly diminishes its hype.

Flight Risk’s Trailer Gives Away The Twist That Mark Wahlberg’s Character Is An Impostor

The Trailer Seemingly Spoils The Film’s Most Defining Moment

Flight Risk‘s official trailer begins by introducing Mark Wahlberg’s character as the pilot of an aircraft carrying an Air Marshal and fugitive on trial. However, as the trailer progresses, it hints that there is more to Wahlberg’s character than meets the eye. The Air Marshal notices he has blood on his jacket, suggesting he may not be who he claims to be. The trailer could have very well ended here, leaving viewers curious about Wahlberg’s character’s identity and motives. However, strangely, it keeps going and ends up disclosing the movie’s biggest potential twist.

The trailer reveals Mark Wahlberg’s character is a hitman hired to kill the fugitive before they land. Although the Air Marshal manages to overpower the hitman character and tie him down before he can execute his mission, she finds herself in dire straits because the hitman is the only trained pilot in the aircraft. Chaos ensues as new challenges erupt during this tense airborne struggle. By giving a glimpse of its high-soaring chaos and action, Flight Risk effectively raises the hype surrounding the upcoming Mel Gibson movie, but it should not have revealed its big twist.

While there is still a slight possibility that Flight Risk has another M. Night Shyamalan-esque twist up its sleeve, it would have been a way better movie if it maintained an air of ambiguity surrounding Mark Wahlberg’s character. Instead of giving away that he is an impostor, the movie should have just left viewers wondering what role he plays in the movie’s overarching story. Perhaps the best scene where the trailer should have ended is when the Air Marshal notices blood on his jacket and questions his motives.

Flight Risk
is scheduled to be released on 18 October 2024.

However, now that the twist has already been spoiled, one can only hope there is more to unpack in the final movie. Mel Gibson’s impressive line of work as a director affirms the film will not disappoint. Not to mention, as the Flight Risk trailer confirms, Mark Wahlberg will be playing a villain after decades, which is another aspect of the thriller audiences must look forward to, even though its big reveal is not a secret anymore.
