Any Marmite lover will know the frustration: you get to the end of your jar, and you just can’t seem to scrape the last of that glorious spread out, andonto your waiting toast.
For a short, blissful time, the solution was Marmite Squeezy. An easy, mess-free way to get your hit.
But in 2020, much to the horror of Squeezy fans across the nation, the packaging was discontinued.
That is, until now.
Having listened to shoppers, Marmite is relaunching a new and improved version of Marmite Squeezy, with a thinner, less viscous formula.
This means it’ll be even easier to squeeze out onto your toast, into pasta dishes and casseroles (don’t knock it…).
Since the product disappeared off shelves four years ago, there’s been repeated calls to bring it back. ‘Miss squeezy Marmite. Bring back squeezy Marmite,’ wrote one devastated fan.
‘The squeezy marmite jar is one of the greatest inventions,’ wrote one user.
And some went to great lengths to cling onto the squeezy version: ‘Please bring back squeezy Marmite – soooo much better and easier to control. I’m now filling up an old squeezy Marmite with marmite from a jar and it’s a mighty pain in the rear!’
But not everyone loves it, with one user pointing out that, just like the spread itself, it’s a ‘divisive issue’.
On X, after journalist and editor Alan Rusbridger shared his hatred for the squeezy tub, a heated debate ensued.
‘Squeezing Marmite out of a tiny sphincter is the least appetising thing in the universe,’ wrote one horrified commenter. Another dubbed it ‘a thing of horror, an abomination.’
Even Nigella Lawson got involved, adding that marmite in a squeezy tube was ‘all wrong, texturally and contextually.’
Others online are glass jar purists: ‘I don’t consider the squeezy jars a reflection of the true Marmite user experience.’
Thankfully, the original glass jar version isn’t going anywhere, but Marmite Squeezy will return to Sainsbury’s stores nationwide.
Annabelle Young, brand manager at Marmite, said: ‘After years of customer demands, we are thrilled to announce that we are bringing our beloved Marmite Squeezy jar. This product offers the same delicious taste, but makes it even easier to enjoy.
‘We can’t wait to spread the love by making everyone’s Marmite experience that little bit smoother!’
The relaunch will be welcome good news for Marmite fans, after they were left devastated when the ‘exquisite’ Marmite peanut butter was discontinued.
Foodies were first introduced to the salty snack in 2019, as Unilever tested the waters with its new ‘Mar-malicious’ spin on the staple.
However, it was confirmed in September that the salty snack was no more after various Marmite enthusiasts struggled to find it during their weekly shops.
‘We’re always reviewing our ranges to make sure our products reflect shopper preferences, whilst also focusing on new innovations,’ a spokesperson for Unilever told The Grocer.
