Martin Scorsese teases multiple story ideas for his next movie as he approaches turning 82 years of age. From the 1970s to the present day, Scorsese is the director of movies such as Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Departed, The Wolf of Wall Street and, at 81 years old, he delivered one of the finest films of his career in Killers of the Flower Moon. Over the past year, Scorsese has been exploring several options for his next movie, including an adaptation of The Life of Jesus, a book by Shūsaku Endō.

During a recent interview with the Associated Press discussing his new docudrama series, Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints, the director teased multiple story ideas for his next movie. Asked if The Life of Jesus would be his next film, Scorsese said, “It’s an option,” and went on to tease two more ideas – an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s Home and stories about his mother and father growing up. It’s an option but I’m still working on it. There’s a very strong possibility of me doing a film version of Marilynne Robinson’s Home, but that’s a scheduling issue. There’s also a possibility of me going back and dealing with the stories from my mother and father from the past and how they grew up. Stories about immigrants which tied into my trip to Sicily. Right now, there’s been a long period after Killers of the Flower Moon. Even though I don’t like getting up early, I’d like to shoot a movie right now. Time is going. I’ll be 82. Gotta go.

Scorsese was specifically asked about his adaptation of The Life of Jesus, and he said, “It’s an option but I’m still working on it.” The director reportedly wants to film parts of the movie in Israel, which could be difficult due to the country’s ongoing war with Hamas, which has seemingly postponed the project for now. Scorsese made no mention of his Frank Sinatra biopic, which reportedly stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence, but has also stalled since it requires approval from the late singer’s daughter, Tina.

Scorsese mentions two other ideas for his next movie. The first is an adaptation of Marilynne Robinson’s Home, a 2008 novel that chronicles the life of the Boughton family, focusing on Reverend Robert Boughton and his two adult children who return home to Gilead, acting as a companion to the author’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name. However, Scorsese says there is a “scheduling issue” there. For his next movie, Scorsese also suggests telling stories about how his parents grew up, who were both Italian immigrants from Sicily.

However, there is now a “scheduling issue.” Whatever Martin Scorsese‘s next movie is, it should continue the high standard of excellence he has set with his last two films, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon, which were both ambitious epics.
