MSI has launched a new ultrawide QD-OLED monitor, MPG 491CQPX. While similar in name and spec to the existing MPG 491CQP in some ways, it couldn’t be more different in others. The most immediate and important upgrade of the bunch, though, is its 240Hz refresh rate.
MPG 491CQPX is 49in in size, featuring a 5120×1440 resolution that leaves it with 108PPI. These credentials make it equivalent to having two QHD displays side-by-side sans any bezel. Suffice it to say, this bad boy demands a seriously big disk, measuring in at 1,195mm × 328mm × 410mm (W×D×H) out of the box. However, you can trim its depth and height to 190mm and 372mm, respectively, with a 100×100mm VESA mount.
Unlike its sibling, MPG 491CQPX uses the latest generation of QD-OLED panels to offer a 240Hz refresh rate. This comes with an improved subpixel structure that mitigates text fringing, making written content or text-heavy games much less of a headache.
With reduced text fringing, MPG 491CQPX can focus on providing the plethora of dazzling display capabilities it has to offer. It has a lightning-fast 0.03ms GtG pixel response time, practically infinite contrast ratio, and 1,000nits of peak brightness, all making for an excellent experience no matter your preferences. Add to that a 1,800R curvature to surround your view and 98% AdobeRGB gamut coverage, and it’ll be easy to get lost in this monitor and lose track of time.
MSI offers plenty of burn-in protection technologies to stave away any issues with prolonged use, but owning a self-emissive display still requires a more caring touch than an LCD. So, while you could use MPG 491CQPX for productivity, content consumption, and gaming, we’d think twice about running Excel spreadsheets on it all day. Nonetheless, MSI covers any burn-in with a three-year warranty.
This model comes equipped for all scenarios, offering one DisplayPort 1.4a plus two HDMI 2.1 video inputs and one USB Type-C with 98W power delivery. There’s also a USB hub providing two Type-A connections for peripherals, which goes hand in hand with the included KVM switch and the PiP/PbP modes for multi-taskers.
Lastly, regarding ergonomics, you will find -5/+20° tilt, -30/+30° swivel, and 100mm height adjustments in addition to the 100mm VESA mount. Nothing unusual, just what you’d expect. Note that if you plan to go with a VESA mount, you will need a sturdy arm to support its 10.6kg weight.
We still don’t know the price, but if we’re lucky, there won’t be a premium attached for the larger screen real estate. Looking at Samsung’s Odyssey G9 G93SC and Philips’ Evnia 49M2C8900 to see where it could land, we imagine 491CQPX will cost around $1,000 / £800, which is a similar price to the non-ultrawide 480Hz and 4K 240Hz OLEDs out there right now.
