MSI supports above 8,000MT/s CUDIMM DDR5 on Ryzen 9000


An MSI overclocker has unveiled that AMD X870-based motherboards will also support the new CUDIMM (Clocked Unbuffered Dual In-line Memory Module) memory. This means higher RAM speeds hitting upwards of 10,000MT/s.

It seems that AMD Ryzen CPUs are also eying the higher speed provided by CUDIMM RAM. With its upcoming X870 and X870E motherboards, MSI should bring parity between Intel and AMD when it comes to RAM speed. According to TOPPC on YouTube, Ryzen 8000 and 9000 processors will be the first to support CUDIMM RAM, with the 7000 Series possibly later.

The reason for this delay seems to be an incompatibility preventing Ryzen 7000 from booting using CUDIMM memory. While MSI didn’t confirm plans to support these chips, TOPPC believes nothing is stopping it.

CUDIMM is a new memory design that boasts higher frequencies thanks to its onboard clock generator. Though it maintains compatibility with existing DDR5 UDIMM slots, it can reach much higher speeds, announced at 9,600MT/s, with brands expecting above 10,000MT/s sometime later. Note, however, that TOPPC has dismissed the idea that 10,000MT/s CUDIMM is just around the corner.

As usual with these out-of-spec speeds, compatibility may vary depending on the memory, motherboard, and CPU combo. You can expect the silicon lottery to play a big role in supporting such high speeds since not all integrated memory controllers can handle them. After all, officially, AMD only supports DDR5-5600 on its latest Ryzen CPUs. With that in mind, CUDMM’s ability to boot at a lower frequency before adjusting it later may help with this.

Unfortunately, though AMD’s embargo on X870 and X870E motherboard reviews is lifting today, we are unlikely to see anyone putting these claims to the test. The reason is the current absence of any CUDIMM DDR5 in stores. Though unlikely, some lucky ones may get an exclusive sneak peek from memory makers.
