An elderly mother was discovered ‘fused’ to bedsheets and covered in feces and maggots in a home she was living in with her son.
Cops responded to a welfare check call at a home on Dresner Circle in Pennsylvania on Sunday and found the son, Daniel Klein, 51, and a ‘foul odor’ coming from inside, according to the Upper Chichester Township Police Department.
‘Police then asked the defendant if his mother was okay and if it would be okay for him to escort police to his mother to check on her,’ stated the police department.
Klein escorted cops to the rear master bedroom where he said his mom was sleeping. The hallways were filled with trash and packages and the odor was present.
Cops saw Klein’s mother lying in bed with a blanket over her, ‘unconscious and breathing’, police said. The blanket was soiled.
They called for emergency responders, who removed the blanket and ‘observed her lower half to be covered in dried feces and maggots and her to have ram’s horn toenails’.
The emergency crew ‘evaluated Klein’s mother and observed her to be fused to the bed’, stated the police department. They removed her from the bed and saw she was ‘fused to the bed sheets’.
She was rushed to Crozer Chester Medical Center for evaluation, and Klein was transported there as well.
‘This is one of the worst cases I’ve seen in my four years as district attorney here,’ Delaware County District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer told WPVI.
‘And for this person, the defendant Klein, to do this to his own mother, it’s just… I can’t even imagine.’
Klein was then arrested and taken to the police office to be processed and held for arraignment. He has been charged with abusing a dependent person and reckless endangerment of his mother. His bail was set at $50,000 and he is being held at George Hill Correctional Facility.
The house was stacked with Amazon packages and plastic bags of unopened food at the front door, and had piles of garbage inside. Flies lingered around the windows.
Cops made a forced entry because they had reason to believe that residents were ‘either deceased or having a medical emergency’, according to the police department.
The mother is in critical condition. Her name and and age were not immediately released.
She was found more than two years after a 36-year-old autistic woman, Lacey Fletcher, was discovered dead and fused in a sofa in her parents’ home in Slaughter, Louisiana. Her parents were re-indicted on murder charges in June.
