My Perfect Blue Bloods Ending Would Cement The Show’s Legacy As A Family Drama

Summary

  • Blue Bloods stands out for its focus on family values, seen through the Reagan family dynamics.
  • Fans rallied to save the show after CBS announced plans to cancel it in fall 2024.
  • Eddie becoming pregnant in the finale would solidify the show’s legacy as a family drama.

My dream ending for Blue Bloods would help ensure it is remembered for its commitment to family values. The Tom Selleck-led police drama stands out because of its focus on the Reagan family rather than only on the cases of the week. The series demonstrates its commitment to family by including a Blue Bloods family dinner scene in every episode. Many episodes also include scenes of family members supporting each other, though sometimes the story revolves around intra-family conflicts. The focus on family is inarguably one of the biggest contributors to the show’s popularity.

This show continues to be one of CBS’ highest rated dramas, often winning its Friday night time slot, and when CBS announced plans to cancel it, a fan-led movement to save Blue Bloods gained significant traction. Unfortunately, CBS is sticking to its intention to cancel the series after the final eight episodes air in the fall of 2024. While it would be preferable for CBS to renew Blue Bloods for season 15, I’m hoping for a satisfying wrap-up that re-affirms the series’ commitment to family values.

CBS is reportedly in the process of developing a Blue Bloods spinoff, which is confusing after the network surprisingly canceled the original series.

Eddie Becoming Pregnant In The Finale Would Cement Blue Bloods’ Legacy As a Family Drama

This Ending Would Reassure Audiences That The Reagan Family Will Continue To Thrive

Jamie and Eddie are one of Blue Bloods’ most popular couples, but they don’t get enough time together on screen. I understand that the showrunners don’t want to lean into the family aspects to the point that they become a distraction from the police procedural elements of the series. However, it was disappointing that their wedding was only a small part of the season 9 finale, especially after how long it took for Blue Bloods‘ Jamie and Eddie to get together, and after they were married, the couple shared fewer and fewer scenes.

Jamie and Eddie had been together since season 4, but didn’t get engaged until the end of season 8.

Eddie learning that she is pregnant during the series finale wouldn’t completely solve this problem, as the audience won’t be able to join them for their pregnancy and parenting journey. However, I love this idea because it would cement Blue Bloods’ legacy as the only police procedural to emphasize family values. If Eddie were to become pregnant during the series finale, Blue Bloods would end with the promise of the Reagan family getting another new member, reassuring the audience that the family will continue to grow and spend time together after the final credits roll.

Why Blue Bloods Hasn’t Had An Eddie Pregnancy Up Until Now

It Would Be A Complicated Storyline, Especially Given The Series’ Reputation For Realism

Before Blue Bloods’ cancelation, it would have been difficult to pull off an Eddie pregnancy story without disrupting the show’s core premise. Although Blue Bloods is popular for its family values, it is also a police drama, and one of its other goals is to depict the NYPD in a fair and realistic light. Thus, the showrunners wouldn’t have wanted to have Eddie continue working the streets until she was about to give birth. The series also wouldn’t want to devote an entire season to Eddie and Jamie being anxious about protecting their baby’s health or devolve into soap opera-like drama about complications.

My dream ending allows Eddie to become pregnant at the end of the series so that the writers don’t have to worry about writing a realistic pregnancy and birth story for her.

I supported this decision in the past because I’ve covered enough unrealistic police dramas to understand how pregnancy stories tend to go. However, now that Blue Bloods season 14 has only eight episodes left, these concerns are far less relevant. My dream ending allows Eddie to become pregnant at the end of the series so that the writers don’t have to worry about writing a realistic pregnancy and birth story for her. Instead, the Blue Bloods finale can focus on wrapping up the Reagans’ story in as satisfying a manner as possible, given the series’ cancellation.
