However much you might love (or secretly dislike) them, dealing with in-laws can be a challenge.
But, needing to care for them in times of ill health aside, how would you feel about having yours move in with you? Worse still, if your significant other started the process of moving them in without your consent?
No, this isn’t a hypothetical scenario, but the stressful reality for one Reddit user who detailed his situation in the viral AmITheA**hole thread.
The married couple already owned an acre of land in Minnesota, and were looking at submitting plans to build a four-bedroom home, with one bedroom for them, one each for their two children, and an extra room to be used as a playroom.
After completing the planning applications, @bulmynjo’s wife asked him: ‘”Where’s my family staying?”’
But this wasn’t just a question about the logistics of them sleeping over from time to time: she’d ‘already promised them that they would move in with us.’
The poster writes that his wife became furious when he protested, telling him he only cares about himself.
He added: ‘I told her I didn’t agree to that from the start. Now she’s looking to sell the land from under me to prove a point, I guess.’
Under the terms and conditions, the land is jointly owned by the couple. The husband noted: ‘Her family has no stake or rights to our land.’
But even after making his feelings clear, he received a call from the town’s registrar about inquiries they’d received regarding a change in ownership.
Since the couple technically own two parcels of land, he offered to sell one to her siblings for ‘market value’ – an offer which she declined.
‘The house will be paid by me. I told her if her family want, I can do an ADU [Accessory Dwelling Unit – a self-contained space on the same land as a family home], but they will pay market value for their rent per room,’ @bulmynjo pens, noting that this would come to around $900 (£698) each.
‘She declined.’
Naturally, Redditors were outraged, with @slash_networkboy remembering the time he moved his father-in-law into his family home as ‘a miserable experience.’
‘My mother and her husband lived with us for six years,’ @jljboucher added.
‘It was horrible. My husband has the patience of a saint and even he was ready to move at the first chance.’
