Netflix subscribers better act fast as a ‘mesmerizing’ movie, with a huge Rotten Tomatoes score, is about to leave the platform in just a few days.
The Guest was first released in 2014, following solider David arriving at the house of the Peterson family after their son died in action.
After they welcome him into their New Mexico home, mysterious deaths occur in their community, with the newcomer at the center.
Dan Stevens led the cast beside Sheila Kelley, Joel David Moore and Malika Monroe, who is set to star in the upcoming remake of The Hand That Rocks The Cradle.
However, the thriller will be leaving Netflix on December 12 so if you haven’t watched it yet, or just want to unpack the madness once more, you might want to hurry up…
The Guest currently commands an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 92% from critics, while the audience rating stands at 69%.
Rolling Stone’s Peter Travers praised: ‘Dan Stevens is mesmerizing as the avenger, helping director Adam Wingard turn The Guest into a blast of wicked mirth and malice.’
Kate Erbland from Film.com simply described the flick as ‘wickedly entertaining’.
Mark Kermode of the Observer shared: ‘Wingard and Barrett’s increasingly ludicrous schlocker has plenty of fun with genre convention, unafraid to laugh at itself as the bodies pile up and the knowing nods and winks become manic twitches.’
As Time Out’s Guy Lodge said: ‘An effectively bloody, breakneck ride, given an extra coat of alluring gloss by the John Carpenter-influenced 1980s styling that is currently all the rage in the genre.’
Although it has been more than 10 years since the original movie hit the big screen, director Adam Wingard revealed that there had been talk of a possible sequel, or even a TV series, in the works.
Unpacking plans in a chat with The Direct, writer Simon Barrett recently teased: ‘The honest truth is, Adam and I talk about a sequel probably every other week; it comes up, and we’ll just talk about it for a little bit.
‘From my perspective, I’m a little more reluctant than Adam is, just because I’m so precious about the fan base that The Guest has developed since it came out, where we thought the movie was just a total failure, initially, both critically and certainly financially.
‘And since it’s gone on to develop this fan base and cult following…
‘I really don’t want to do anything to spoil that because the idea that a fan of The Guest might have of what The Guest 2 could be, that’s a hard thing to live up to.
‘It is something we talk about all the time… We will only do it if we feel really like we’re not going to screw it up, and the circumstances are perfect.’
The Guest is available to stream on Netflix now.
