Netflix viewers will now be able to expand their understanding of Australian slang after the release of a comedy series once dubbed ‘the funniest show ever’ by fans.
Upper Middle Bogan ran for three seasons, airing between 2013 and 2016, and has now been released by the streaming service in the U.K.
It follows the story of two different families connected by blood, who enter each other’s lives after a shocking discovery.
Doctor Bess Denyer lives in inner-city Melbourne with her architect husband Danny (Colin from Accounts’ Patrick Brammall) and 13-year-old twins Oscar and Edwina.
However, she is floored to learn she was actually adopted after her overbearing posh mother Margaret is admitted to the hospital for high blood sugar levels and a blood test reveals the truth of Bess’ heritage.
Bess then decides to track down her birth parents, Wayne and Julie Wheeler, who have not only gone on to have three more children together (Amber, Kayne and Brianna) but are also the owners of a drag racing team in the outer suburbs of the city.
As the title suggests Bess’ biological parents are bogans – for the uninitiated, someone with a working-class background who usually has a passion for flannelettes, VB, utes and mullets.
Fans of the show have urged other to tune in.

‘Just finished a rewatch of Upper Middle Bogan, first time I’ve seen it in like idk 5 years… it really holds up. It’s kinda like an Australian Modern Family, for those who are interested and don’t know it. Just a short 24 episodes too, so I recommend,’ Riley shared.
‘An Australian show on Netflix called Upper Middle Bogan. It may take a while to get the humour, but it is worth it,’ Gavin added.
Others called it their ‘favourite show ever’ while another labelled it ‘the funniest’ they’d ever seen.
In an interview with Female when the show first came out, Annie described how ‘unique’ the series was.
‘When you look at the title you think it will be a satirical comedy however…someone described Upper Middle Bogan Modern Family meets Sylvania Waters,’ she said.
‘It has a lot of affection, warmth and hopefully a lot of depth to it as well as the really funny moments. It’s not a heightened stereotypical comedy it’s more naturisms.’
She also said the show was anything but condescending, saying it ‘wasn’t poking fun at privilege or bogans’ but was a ‘gentle look at class in Australia which we are not that comfortable with’.
The series also stars Robyn Nevin (The Matrix franchise), Kath & Kim’s Glenn Robbins, Neighbours’ Michala Banas and Maddy Jevic, who went on to appear on Married at First Sight Australia last year.
Upper Middle Bogan is streaming on Netflix.
