New Spider-Man Universe Movie’s Early Box Office Projections Mean Sony Could Break A 22-Year Marvel Record

Kraven the Hunter‘s box office predictions are on track to break a Marvel movie record for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. J.C. Chandor’s upcoming Kraven the Hunter is the first R-rated movie in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, and it will introduce at least three new Spider-Man villains in the franchise: the titular Kraven, Rhino, and Kraven’s brother Chameleon. Kraven the Hunter will release only two months after Venom: The Last Dance, which is tracking behind Sony’s previous two Venom movies at the box office.

Per BoxOfficePro, Kraven the Hunter is projected to earn $20-25 million domestically throughout its first three days in theaters. This figure is considerably lower than Morbius‘ $39 million domestic opening weekend. Kraven the Hunter could also match Madame Web‘s abysmal six-day $25.8 million opening earnings, potentially making it one of the lowest-grossing films in Marvel movie history.

What Kraven The Hunter’s Box Office Projections Mean

Kraven The Hunter’s Box Office Might Be Affected By The Rest Of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

Unfortunately for Kraven the Hunter, Sony’s Spider-Man Universe hasn’t had an excellent run since its inception. Sony’s Venom trilogy has been met with moderate but decreasing success, as Venom earned $856 million, Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned $506 million, and Venom: The Last Dance has only surpassed $400 million one month after its release. Meanwhile, Morbius earned $167 million and Madame Web barely crossed the $100 million mark a few months before Kraven the Hunter‘s release.

With a string of losses preceding it, audiences might not be holding out hope for Kraven the Hunter. After all, the trailers suggest the movie is quite similar to previous Sony Marvel movies in various ways. Kraven the Hunter follows a more heroic version of a classic Spider-Man villain, pits him against a similar enemy (Kraven’s father Nikolai Kravinoff), changes its protagonist’s story (Kraven now has superpowers), and doesn’t feature Spider-Man at all.

Although it seems likely for Kraven the Hunter‘s box office to go down the same path as Morbius and Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter could turn the tide for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe. Kraven the Hunter‘s R rating is a sign of confidence from the studio, as R-rated comic book films like Joker and the Deadpool trilogy fared quite well. That said, Joker: Folie à Deux flopped despite its R rating and the first movie’s goodwill. Regardless, Kraven the Hunter is key to Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, as a poor performance could result in the cancelation of future projects.
