Noctua has finally set free its much-awaited NH-D15 replacement. The new CPU cooler builds on its predecessor’s legacy, offering an overengineered solution for those who only accept the best.
Dubbed NH-D15 G2, this new flagship CPU cooler from the beige brand is ready to tame latest desktop chips thanks to its design changes and optimisations. First of all, G2 boasts 20% more surface area spread over the asymmetrical fin stacks that make its dual towers. Another thing that catches the eye right away is the extra heatpipe, which brings the total to eight, potentially improving heat transfer to the fins.
However, the improvements don’t stop there, as G2 also comes equipped with two of Noctua’s new NF-A14x25r G2 140mm fans. These are made using LCP (Liquid Crystal Polymer), which offers more rigidity, allowing Noctua to get the blades’ ends even close to the frame – 0.7mm, to be precise. This should improve the performance while keeping a low noise level. The brand’s obsession with perfection goes as far as offsetting the speed of the fans to improve the cooler’s acoustics by reducing beat frequencies.
Noctua even went a step further by offering three different versions of the same cooler: LBC, HBC, and MBC/standard. Each has a distinct base plate that suits different CPU HIS (Integrated Heat Spreader) designs.
Roughly speaking, you should pair the LBC (Low Base Convexity) with a relatively flat CPU like AMD’s AM5 socket chips, whereas the HBC (High Base Convexity) would better suit Intel’s LGA1700. Lastly, installation should be simple enough thanks to the SecuFirm2+ mounting system, with second-gen NT-H2 thermal paste acting as an interface between the CPU and cooler. AMD owners can also use the offset mounting system to relocate the cooler above the processor’s hot spot to improve performance further.
Getting to the part that may break it for many: price. NH-D15 G2 is available on Amazon for £127.95 / €149.90 / $149.90, backed by a six-year warranty. It’s a hefty price, no doubt, but at least it makes sense for what might be one of the best CPU coolers.
