OneXPlayer has announced an upgraded version of its flagship 2 Pro gaming handheld. This refresh keeps the 3-in-1 design, now powered by an AMD Ryzen 7 8840U chip.

The maker of the X1 and OneXFly gaming handhelds has unveiled the latest addition to its handheld roster. Based on its flagship OneXPlayer 2 Pro, this upgraded version swaps the original Ryzen 7 7840U for the newer Ryzen 7 8840U.

While AMD’s specs don’t show any notable changes over the 7840U, aside from a faster AI Engine, OneXPlayer claims that the Ryzen 7 8840U offers improved CPU performance, especially in gaming scenarios. The brand further states that it can match the 28W 155H chip using only 15 to 20W of power.

In a performance presentation, OneXPlayer showed the Ryzen 7 8840U delivering around 55fps in God of War at Low quality, 50fps in The Witcher 3 at High quality, and 60fps in Devil May Cry 5 at Ultra High Quality. All games run at a 1920 x 1200 resolution with a 15W power budget. Interesting as the OneXPlayer 2 Pro should carry an identical 65.6Wh battery.

However, this performance doesn’t come cheap. The 32GB RAM plus 1TB storage model will set you back $1,049, while upping to 2TB storage demands $1,149. For comparison, you can get Steam Deck between $399 for the 256GB LCD version or $649 for a 1TB OLED. Asus ROG Ally ,on the other hand, was reduced to $399.99 for the 512GB Z1 model instead of $549.99.

An extra hundred for double the storage space isn’t too bad of an ask. Personally, I’d save myself some cash and go with the good enough, expandable 1TB version.

The OneXPlayer 2 Pro is almost the size of a Steam Deck, but borrows a bigger screen and removable controllers from Lenovo Legion Go. That said, Valve’s machine is considerably slimmer – especially in the centre. On the bright side, OneXPlayer 2 Pro has more room for cooling and I/O, notably including a USB Type-A port.

The upgraded OneXPlayer 2 Pro 8840U edition will be available to pre-order on March 13. As a special offer during pre-orders, OneXPlayer includes a tempered glass screen protector and protective case with every purchase.
