Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) finally found out the truth about Yolande Trueman’s (Angela Wynter) ordeal at the hands of Pastor Clayton (Howard Saddler) in recent EastEnders scenes, and made an emotional promise.
Pastor Clayton sexually assaulted Yolande several weeks ago, and she has since been suffering in silence.
However, Patrick could tell that something wasn’t right and was desperate to get to the bottom of her unusual behaviour.
When Yolande herself was unable to find the words to tell Patrick what had happened to her, she asked Elaine Peacock (Harriet Thorpe) to break it to him over the phone.
After the initial shock of the revelation, Patrick swore to get revenge, but was soon stopped by Yolande who wanted to keep her business private.
Unfortunately, Patrick soon began to question Yolande’s behaviour towards the Pastor prior to the attack, though brave Yolande gave an empowering speech as she explained that she hadn’t been to blame for what had happened to her.
Yolande’s powerful speech
‘He should have stayed the hell away from me! How dare you, Patrick? How dare you blame me?
‘That man… He used his power and his position to manipulate and violate me. To make me think that I was the one who was unreasonable, and not him. He thought he had every right to do as he pleased with me, like he was God himself.
‘So many times over the years, men thinking it’s their right to do as they please. And most of the time, society tells them, “Yes, it is. It is their right.”
‘Years of being told, “It’s a joke. It’s nothing. It’s harmless fun. It’s flattering. Take it, enjoy it, laugh at it”. Because what was the alternative?
‘We were never taught the word “consent”. Women my age, we weren’t saying “#MeToo”.
‘Clayton… He wouldn’t do it to a young woman. And you know why? Because he knows that a young woman has been educated better and she would have found him out sooner.
‘Well, I may be old, but I know that what I was taught… It was wrong. And I know now that no man has the right to do as he please with my body. No man. No man at all.’
Once it was clear that Patrick understood, Yolande expressed her concerns that she may not be able to be intimate with him again, and worried how that would affect their relationship.
However, Patrick promised her that she was the only woman for him, and whether they were intimate or not had no bearing on his love for her.
He even went as far as to insist that he would even turn down Halle Berry for Yolande – high praise indeed.

Determined to help Yolande through her ordeal, Patrick even suggested that they move away from Albert Square, though Yolande insisted that Walford was their home.
She went on to reveal that, although she didn’t want to go to the police about her ordeal, she felt that she needed to speak out against the Pastor, and explained her plan to speak to someone at the church.
