Popular Biblical TV Show The Chosen Gets Spinoff Update From Director

A spinoff of the Biblical drama The Chosen just got a big update. The series is a wildly popular historical drama that derives its plot from the life of Jesus Christ and the people who surrounded him. It is set in first-century Israel where Roman oppression is on the rise, and is considered to be a nuanced look at Jesus’ life. The seasons of the series have been rolled out over years, with season 1 first being released in 2019 and The Chosen season 4 coming out earlier this year.

In an interview with The Direct, director Dallas Jenkins explains what is next for The Chosen universe. According to Jenkins, there is a limited series in active development called Joseph. At this time, the director said that Joseph was still in the script development phase, but would likely come out before The Chosen season 7. He also explained plans for The Book of Moses, which would be “a three-season series,” and would “come out probably about a year or so after The Chosen is done.” Check out the full quote from Jenkins below:

So right now, we’re finishing up the final couple seasons of the current ‘Chosen.’ We’ve got a ‘Joseph’ limited series that we’re developing as a script that would come out probably before season seven of ‘The Chosen.’

And then I’m going to take a nap for about six months, and then when I wake up, I’m going to be getting into ‘The Book of Moses,’ and that’s the show that we want to do next. So that’s going to be a three season show that we’re excited about. It’s a ways off. I’ve still got a Jesus show to to concentrate on, but I do want to do that show that will come out probably about a year or so after ‘The Chosen’ is done.

What This Means For The Chosen Universe

The Chosen Universe Continues Expanding

The news about the Joseph series is a good sign that The Chosen universe will remain incredibly active over the next couple of years. After The Chosen season 4’s massive success on Netflix earlier this year, season 5 has just a few months to go until it premieres in April 2025. The series has also announced the development of the spinoff series The Chosen Adventures and The Chosen in the Wild. The former will be an animated version of many of the same tales from The Chosen, but aimed for a more kid-friendly audience.

The Chosen Season 5: Will It Happen? Everything We Know

The faith-based phenomenon known as The Chosen has already enjoyed four blockbuster seasons, but will the Christian drama return for season 5?

The Chosen in the Wild with Bear Grylls will be a Chosen-themed reality TV series led be reality TV host Bear Grylls. Both of these shows will look to expand The Chosen into other formats, exploring the animated space and the reality TV space. The creation of Joseph and The Book of Moses, on the other hand, will expand The Chosen universe not by changing the storytelling medium, but by broadening the scope of Biblical stories that the show creators tell.

Our Take On The Chosen Shows’ Development

The Chosen Is Filling A New Niche

The Chosen takes up a fascinating sphere on television that has never really been done before on this scale. There has always been biblically-influenced film and television, from The Last Temptation of Christ to Veggie Tales, but Jenkins and the rest of The Chosen team have a much broader vision of what The Chosen will be. The Biblical series is transforming into its own television universe much like that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe or similar franchises. As Joseph continues its development, it will be interesting to see how successful that franchising is.
