The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 now officially has a release date. Created by J. D. Payne and Patrick McKay, the hit Prime Video fantasy series adapting the works of author J. R. R. Tolkien was first released in summer 2022. The Rings of Power season 1 earned mostly positive reviews from critics and was a major viewership hit, and season 2 entered production in fall 2022.

Now, Prime Video confirms that The Rings of Power‘s season 2 premiere date is set for August 29, 2024. This is almost two years to the day after season 1 premiered. Season 2, like season 1, will operate on a weekly release schedule and will feature 8 episodes in total.

Rings of Power’s showrunners have teased a two-episode battle for season 2, and there are a few key Second Age conflicts that could do the job.

Will Rings Of Power Season 2 Set A New Precedent For The Prime Video Series?

When To Expect Future Seasons

Considering Amazon spent a whopping $250 million for the TV rights to The Lord of the Rings, it’s clear that the streamer has big plans for the IP. In all, it’s been reported that The Rings of Power‘s 5 seasons, including the rights, is costing the company roughly $1 billion. Although the audience response to The Rings of Power was a little more mixed than the critics’ response, it’s likely that at least three more seasons will be coming in the years ahead.

With season 2 premiering almost exactly two years after season 1, it’s possible that seasons 3, 4, and 5 will follow this same pattern. Filming for season 2 began in the U.K. in October 2022, the same month in which The Rings of Power season 1 finale aired, and was completed in June 2023. The Rings of Power is obviously a very post-production-heavy series due to the immense amount of VFX involved, which explains why there’s such a large gap between the conclusion of filming and the actual airing of the show.

The Lord of the Rings:
The Rings of Power
season 2 continued filming after the onset of the WGA strike last May without Payne and McKay on set. Filming on season 2 concluded before the onset of the SAG-AFTRA strike in June.

Assuming each season will consist of eight episodes, it’s very possible that The Rings of Power season 3 will start filming this fall and conclude next summer, with a release date then set for August 2026. It’s also possible that Prime Video’s fantasy series will continue to release around the same time as HBO’s House of the Dragon. The two shows famously went head-to-head in summer 2022 and, this summer, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 2 will premiere only weeks after House of the Dragon season 2 concludes.
