Robby Absolutely Let The Miyagi-Do Team Down In Cobra Kai’s Sekai Taikai

Team Miyagi-Do was pretty angry with Robby Keene in Cobra Kai season 6, part 2, and for a very good reason. Robby has long been one of the Netflix series’ best teen fighters, but he has a tendency to let his emotions get the better of him. Still, things were pretty great for this character at the start of Cobra Kai season 6, part 1. Robby was a shoo-in for the Sekai Taikai and had his girlfriend Tory by his side. Their goal was to stand on the podium side by side in the end. However, by the start of Cobra Kai season 6, part 2, Robby was entirely thrown off his game.

At the end of Cobra Kai season 6, part 1, Robby defeats Miguel fair and square during the captain-selection sparring match. This meant he would lead the boys at the coming Sekai Taikai in Barcelona, which had Robby walking on air. However, in one of the most devastating moments in the series, Tory’s mom unexpectedly passed away, leaving her dealing with a lot of anger and regret. Rather than spar to become the girl captain of Miyagi-Do’s team, Tory appeared at the Sekai Taikai with John Kreese’s new Cobra Kai—and Robby didn’t handle this well.

Robby Let His Relationship With Tory Affect His Performance At The Sekai Taikai

Robby Was Devastated That Tory Wanted A “Break”

Robby was in tip-top shape when he headed to Barcelona, but everything fell apart when he saw Tory with Cobra Kai. He was understandably shaken, but it only got worse when Tory told him she wanted to take a break from their relationship to focus on the Sekai Taikai. This destroyed Robby, and he continued to drop the ball for the first several rounds. This went beyond just missing a couple of points or losing his balance. Robby would stare longingly at Tory rather than focus on his opponent, something that was clear to just about everyone in the room.

Robby dropping the ball at the Sekai Taikai is even more frustrating since he was slightly overdramatic about Tory taking a step back. She was clear that this had nothing to do with her feelings for him and that she wasn’t really breaking up with him. Tory’s mom had just passed away, and she was desperate to do well in the tournament in her honor, so she simply requested a little space. It was obvious that Tory would be ready to come around eventually—she didn’t even take her anger out on the conversation or say anything hurtful to Robby. He just lacked the appropriate empathy for her situation.

Robby Made Things Worse By Hooking Up With Zara

Robby’s Heartbreak Leads to Some Bad Decisions

To make matters even worse, Robby compounded his troubles by getting drunk and sleeping with Zara, Tory’s fiercest competitor from the Iron Dragon dojo. He did so because he fell for Kwon Jae-Sung’s taunting. The Cobra Kai boy had teased Robby that he was hooking up with Tori, sending his competitor spiraling. Zara, who was eager to set Tory off her game, jumped on the situation. It all became a massive mess, especially since Robby’s guilt and Tory’s heartbreak meant no one was on their game.

Robby’s poor decision-making here had a significant impact on his team. His fellow Miyagi-Do students looked to him for strength and guidance, and he had nothing to give them.

Robby’s poor decision-making here had a significant impact on his team. His fellow Miyagi-Do students looked to him for strength and guidance, and he had nothing to give them. Miguel was frustrated because being captain would have meant everything to him, Eli and Demetri lost all hope and turned to bad decision-making themselves, and Sam and Devon could only really look on in continued frustration. Every round, it was clear that Miyagi-Do was completely out of control. However, Robby ultimately pulled it together in Cobra Kai season 6 and proved he was a leader—though it was a little late.

It took the emergency with Miguel’s mom, Carmen, for Robby to get ahold of himself. Miguel and Johnny left Barcelona, and when they returned, Miguel took a new note of compassion with Robby. He told his future step-brother that he believed in his strength and ability to lead, but that Robby himself must believe this too. When Robby again took the mat, he demonstrated his leadership by tapping Kenny Payne into the match. The boy was able to claim a win for Miyagi-Do, thus proving his loyalty and dismantling the doubt and distrust festering within the team.

Cobra Kai
season 6, part 3, will be released on Netflix early in 2025.

During Robby’s next match, he annihilated Kwon, proving his strength once again. It was a triumphant return for the Cobra Kai character, and he redeemed himself in the eyes of his teammates. However, it can’t be denied that, given everything that happened, Miyagi-Do would have been better off with Miguel as a team captain during the tournament’s earlier stages. He wouldn’t have been as thrown off by Tory’s betrayal, and he proved through his pep talk with Robby that he has the leadership skills to keep everyone on course. Regardless, that’s not how things shook out in Cobra Kai season 6, part 2.
