The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt compare the relationship between their characters to that of Barbie and Ken in the 2023 adaptation of the Barbie toy line. Gosling, who portrays Colt Seavers in the upcoming action comedy, also played Ken in the toy-based movie last year. Both movies see his character involved in a romantic subplot, with Blunt’s Jody Moreno being his love interest in the upcoming action movie.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Gosling and Blunt explained what to expect from Colt and Jody’s relationship when The Fall Guy gets released, comparing it to Ken and Barbie from the Barbie movie. The pair explain how Jody is an important figure to Colt, much like how Barbie is to Ken. They also tease how the romance blends with the action and the comedy, influencing the direction the movie ends up going. Check out what Gosling and Blunt had to say below:

Ryan Gosling:
I got to actually beach in this, which was nice. I think he’s Kenning very hard for Jody’s Barbie. So, that was good prep because I had to Ken his heart as much as I could.

Emily Blunt:
I feel like she’s not as nice as Barbie, though. I feel like she’s not as receptive in the beginning as Barbie’s more open-hearted, maybe.

Ryan Gosling:
He admires her just as much as Ken admires Barbie. She’s his north star. And he really gets to beach finally. I still don’t know what that actually is, but he gets-

Emily Blunt:
Ken doesn’t know, it’s okay. He doesn’t know either.

Ryan Gosling:
But this was a little different in that it was sort of, we were able to feather in what was happening on the movie into the comedy of the movie. For instance, we didn’t really know how our movie was going to end. Because it was so stunt dependent, and we were trying to figure out if we were going to be able to make this jump, were we going to be able to break these records? What was the weather going to be? So we were always working towards what the real ending of our film would be. And at a certain point we were like, “Oh, let’s just put that in the movie.” So then it became an opportunity for our characters to try and figure out what was going to happen in her movie.

How Similar Will The Fall Guy’s Romance Be To Barbie?

The romance between Colt and Jody teased in the forthcoming action film plays on the characters’ history of previously dating while also showing they still have feelings for each other. This means their relationship will be starting from a very different point than Ken and Barbie’s, where they were already in a romantic relationship at the start of the film. With The Fall Guy and Barbie both having Gosling in a leading role for both film’s romances, more similarities could crop up when the action movie gets released.

However, it seems their relationships will be very different, as Ken ends up becoming a secret antagonist in Barbie when he learns about the patriarchy and tries to implement it into Barbieland. A similar type of twist for Colt is unlikely to transpire, since he’s in a very defined hero role as he searches for the missing star of Jody’s movie. While there could be some tension between the stuntman and director as he continues looking for the lost actor, it doesn’t seem like a major falling out will happen given the other stakes teased in the film.

The Fall Guy Looks Like The Sequel To $62M Ryan Gosling Movie We’ve Wanted For 8 Years

Despite the differences in style & tone, Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy looks like the spiritual sequel to an underrated movie he did 8 years ago.

Despite how different both movies are, though, Gosling and Blunt indicate the romance between their characters in The Fall Guy will be just as important to their movie as Ken and Barbie’s relationship was in Barbie. While there will be key differences between the romances of both films, the relationship between the leads is still a core element of how both movies develop. With the action-packed rom-com just a few weeks away, it won’t be long until the comparisons between the films’ lead relationships become more clarified.
