Samsung really, really wants to work on next-gen Nvidia GPUs

Samsung is seemingly taking extreme steps to attract Nvidia into its 3nm node. The South Korean giant is doing all it can to ensure its manufacturing readiness as to satisfy demand. After Apple, Nvidia is the fish to catch if Samsung wants massive revenues.

The Korean outlet FN News has reported that Samsung is trying to get orders from Nvidia for its next-gen GPU design. The Korean brand is also making sure it meets the GPU maker’s requirements to sway it from TSMC. Seeing how all recent Nvidia GPUs, including its server-grade products, are made using TSMC’s factories, Samsung will have a hard time convincing it to switch its winning horse.

This is not the first time these brands have teamed up to manufacture GPUs. However, the last time Nvidia did that, things didn’t go perfectly as the competition benefited from a robust TSMC 7nm while Nvidia struggled with lower yields on Samsung’s 8nm node. That said, according to Nvidia, the RTX 3000 shortage was due to unprecedented demand throughout lockdown, which pushed many to work from home.

While TSMC seems to have the edge when it comes to node advantage, Apple is currently trying to snag every bit of the 2nm production capacity for itself. This could lead Nvidia to seek other solutions. If not, TSMC may have the best day ever with trillion-dollar companies fighting over it. Needless to say, in this case, prices may skyrocket again.

Samsung plans to push its 3nm process, which uses the GAA (Gate-All-Around) architecture. The latter offers an upgraded transistor structure said to bring power consumption and performance improvements.

Samsung is also said to have imposed an internal strategy codenamed Nemo, encouraging each department to receive orders from Nvidia. All that is left is to see if this strategy will pay off.
